How Will the COVID Pills Change the Pandemic?
New antiviral drugs are startlingly effective against the coronavirus—if they’re taken in time.

There’s only one horse’s ass in this story, and you see him every time you look in the mirror. I broke no rules other than inadvertently annoying you. Well here we go, Both Merck and Pfizer have drugs that when used during tests have allowed zero deaths. Zero???PhDhawk wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 9:25 am How Will the COVID Pills Change the Pandemic?

There are studies that have the vaccines wearing off at six months. Hence get a booster. Is the booster for the delta or cause your vaccine is no longer effective. How many vaccinated people have died??
Are the vaccines 100% effective???????? Is the delta variant the cause of the spike or is it caused more from vaccine being less effective over time???? If vaccinated then you have zero percent chance of death from covid?????? You do have less chance of being hospitalized so you have that.
The problem is the vaccine is not the silver bullet. These drugs they the silver bullet.
Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
No vaccine is 100% effective. This pill won't be either. Stop thinking like that. Lots of vaccines require boosters, that doesn't mean they're not effective. Tetanus vaccines are great, they require boosters, your dog's rabies vaccine is incredibly safe and effective, it requires boosters. Boosters are a good thing, not a problem. If your immunity protection dips to something like 65% protective and you can boost it back up to ~90% that's a good thing.
The vaccine booster is the same, which is still very protective against Delta, though not as good as to the original virus. They'd have to redo clinical trials if they changed the sequence to match delta.
Vaccines are always better than medicines. It's better to prevent an illness than to treat it after the fact.
The vaccine significantly reduces your chances of getting the virus, getting sick from the virus, dying and spreading the virus if you do get it. And there is a synergy that occurs when more people are vaccinated.
The polio vaccine and smallpox vaccine were about 90% effective and they got rid of both those viruses because everyone got vaccinated.

Brushing your teeth doesn't prevent cavities 100% of the time and you have to do it multiple times every day.
Antibiotics aren't 100% effective and you usually have to take multiple doses over several days, but they've saved millions of lives.
Lazer eye surgery doesn't fix everyone's eye site and eyesight gets bad again over time and you need to get it redone.
No one considers these things failures.

Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
Nope not at all. Probably cause they bought a TELSA.
Focus on my last sentence. The silver bullet part. The zero death part.
Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
I think you are right. The way forward will be a combination of vaccines to keep down the severity of the illness and palliative medicines to knock out what remains. The vaccines have not turned out to be what Fauci et al were trying to sell the public, but they still seem to help - at least in the short term.

Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
There were zero deaths during the vaccine trials too. If you test it on 2,000 people and no one dies, that won't hold up when you move it to 2 million.
But, that doesn't mean it doesn't work. If this medicine significantly reduces lethality that's wonderful.
But again, it's better to reduce your chances of getting sick in the first place. And it's better to reduce your chances of transmitting it to someone else before you even develop symptoms. Vaccines do that.

Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
Be honest about it though. They were as good as advertised on the original virus. The efficacy dropped with the delta variant, but is still pretty good. We saw what happened in the summer, before delta became a problem in the US.JKLivin wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 1:16 pmI think you are right. And the virus information is happening in real time. As great as the initial data was, I don't think Fauci or anyone promised lifetime immunity. In fact, at least about length of efficacy they were pretty up front that a booster or second type of vaccine may be necessary.
This was true of polio. Salk's vaccine was great, but they developed improved versions over time.
These drugs are great, and there will continue to be breakthrough infections, so it's good to have a secondary line of defense, but this isn't a reason not to be vaccinated.

Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
I don’t discount that. It has been a fluid situation from Day One. And as I said, being vaccinated still seems more beneficial than not being vaccinated.PhDhawk wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 2:01 pmBe honest about it though. Re: COVID-19 - On the Ground
Fauci hasn't been perfect. But the majority of the fuck ups are from not listening to his advice rather than listening to it.
This is also a new pathogen. There aren't decades of research that you can rely on. So, they asked you to wash your hands and disinfect common surfaces, because they thought it could be transmitted through fomites, we now know that's probably an infrequent route of transmission. So, I'm sorry you had to wash your hands a few extra times. That's not even a mistake, it was just being cautious.
They should not have advised against wearing masks, but as soon as they discovered there were such a large portion of symptomatic carriers, they changed the stance. Neither SARS1 nor MERS had asymptomatic carriers, so they didn't have a reason initially to assume this one did.
The virus is an RNA virus, they mutate quickly, even faster when millions of people are infected globally, not sure how that's fucking things up.
Otherwise, the what have been the big fuck ups, suggesting people drink bleach? Suggesting people shove UV lights up their asses? insisting that anti-parasitic drugs were a cure when all the clinical trials said otherwise? I mean, plexi-glass dividers don't work as well as we'd like, but were you hurt in any way because your grocery store installed some?
