I was finding mixed opinions on that...
It is wild how mainstream "[science/fact] is a matter of opinion" has become.
not saying you are guilty of this, but many mistake variations in evidence as mixed opinions or a lack of scientific consensus

it’s important for everyone to remember that we are still learning about covid, and that as more data become available, we gain a deeper understanding of the situation

science, very rarely, operates in absolutes...some (looking at psych) view this as a weakness
To be clear, I wasn't intending to single out Illy (that's just the nature of quoting).

My mind was on Coney Barrett saying last week that she wouldn't weigh on in whether humans are causing client change, on the grounds of it being a matter of public debate.

Listen: the only reason a smart person would say something that mother fucking stupid is because it that fact inconvenient to their other, core ideologies.

I think almost everyone agrees humans cause climate change....

i think maybe where it gets harder to quantify is how much is caused by humans and how much is natural? Or at least that is where some people begin to get confused?

i’m hesitant to even ask, but have you personally looked at the research/data, or are just basing this comment off of what the media has said?

🤣🤣🤣

I am hesitant to even answer...

Are we talking about global warming or climate change (since those 2 are often used interchangeably, but have distinct meanings)?

But (obviously) most of my research is typically whatever trump tweets and any legit looking memes i can find on facebook.

Global warming or climate change?

...but yes i have read about the studies. I am of full belief that humans are causing about 95% of global warming.

My 7 year old daughter's dance studio has been rolled back to full virtual thanks to a COVID outbreak. Multiple teachers she had last week have reported positive as well as the studio owner and her daughter ( who is in my daughter's group. I guess we'll see how well their masks work and how good she's been at wearing it. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

I am trying my best to support local businesses right to act responsibly, make appropriate changes to the business model as far as masks, distancing, sanitizing etc... and stay open just as the more responsible end of the Republican spectrum has been asking us to do.

Yet here we are.

Ya i hear you.

Anything indoors like that is an easy no for me at this point still. Just too risky even with masks. We pulled our daughter out of gymnastics to avoid the situation you are in now. Tbh, if it was just us i was looking out for it wouldn't be an issue, but my with parents (both 65+) serving as our main childcare the 2 days a week where my wife works there is just no way we felt like we could risk it. Same reason she is still fully remote learning even though her school started back hybrid this week (2 days in person for 5hrs a day just didn't seem worth the risk to my parents since they still keep my younger 1 and her on the 2 days my wife works).

Nothing is easy in 2020 it seems. Doesn't appear this will subside until summer of 2021 at the earliest so just have to take it day by day.

Hopefully your kid avoided the virus (or fungus as someone here calls it)....and if not, thankfully kids seem to do better with it than the elderly, and treatment methods are improving each day. Good luck! Anything involving your kids makes it 1000x more unnerving.

Yep. Fortunate not to have any older family members we deal with regularly.and directly so it's just us four affected.

I really don't want to hide in my house and avoid everything. I really do want local businesses to be able to make it through this. But not enough people are being vigilant enough for this to work.

A business can perform perfectly for 98% of their day but if their employees go back into a break room, take off their masks and hang out at the end of the day and infect each other then that perfect 98% was a waste of time, money and effort.

I have a co-worker who lives in Indiana. Today her kids are back in their school building for the first time since March.
I have no idea why today (October 20) was the day they decided it's "safe" for the kids to go back to school.
Gee, let's wait until rates RISE before we send our kids back to school.
I just don't get it.

There is only so much people can do with an airborne virus, some things aren't fully safe no matter what measures are taken (short of full PPE). Cloth masks help, but in prolonged periods indoors with shared air they are far from a total spread stopper.

Agreed. And exactly why mine is home even though they went back to hybrid yesterday. It is worse now than when it was shutdown in the first place. Doesn't make much sense.

It makes perfect sense. We as civilized human beings require some semblance of normalcy.

We can’t be all on normal. But we can take precautions and let ourselves, and the children, enjoy some parts of normal.

We need it. We require it.

My school district has a population of 20,000. Not sure of exact school age population numbers. But 6 weeks in there have been 2 positive K-4 cases. 1 positive 5-8 case and 1 positive 9-12 case. There have been about 30 who have had to quarantine due to exposure but there has not been a transmission from one school aged kid to another school age kid.

Which in itself is a win honestly. Something is working and the kids are doing their part as well to keep it that way.

My kids did go hybrid for this week as positive percentage of cases in the county did go above 10%, but have since dropped and they dropped again so they will be back in school next week.

Last year, I was all for remote learning as it was so unknown. This year, I have been a fan of in school or hybrid learning methods. I do think that precautions do work and the kids have been able to enjoy some normalcy.

That is awesome...i do wonder though, how many students with it go unnoticed because they are asymptomatic? It isn't like the kids who feel fine are getting tested unless they have known exposure to a person who tests positive.

My county is up above 9% positivity rate, and they said no school until below 5%....but they have apparently abandoned that.

City schools are remote only. Private schools have been fully in person for months and no major outbreaks that have been reported....although i am not sure they'd report it anyway, and many of the private school parents are in the "this is fake" crowd it seems like.

How many of us have had it and not realized. I'm kind of getting to the point to where if it happens, it just happens. I'm still taking precautions, not going out as much, wearing a mask, etc. But it's also so hidden among us that we don't know who has had it and who hasn't really.

Totally true.

Guy i golf with had it and never even knew. Wouldn't have ever known other than he trains youth baseball players and had to get tested because 1 of them ended up with it....when he got tested they said he was positive but that they think he had it months ago and was asymptomatic (how they came to that conclusion i do not know, i am assuming his levels were really low).
