Another thing that's been happening at least in KC: Restaurant/Bar owners not telling their employees who tested positive and threatening them if they talk to anyone, including media, about the secrecy. Owners fear getting shut down and losing their business and risking a lot of people's health.

Again, I feel for the owners. They should be in this position. Another pot that is already boiling over. And, it could have been avoided.

We have to decide by Thursday of this week whether to keep the older kids home for spring semester, or send them (the middle schooler would go 2x/week, the elementary schooler every day).

There's just not a good decision to be made.

I'm shocked my kids school district hasn't been proactive and went ahead and declared remote learning from Thanksgiving to Christmas Break.
Consider yourself lucky.

Children in my area get no in person schooling. And no athletics.

Not a good time to be a young person.
My high school senior is pissed that they are waiting to roll back to half in-person and half remote until after Thanksgiving. She rightly pointed out that the delay is most likely due to their school playing in the football state finals this weekend. Surely it's a coincidence that the district superintendant and the biggest $$$ donors to the district both have sons on the football team this year.

Her and most of her friends want things rolled back now because even they see what's coming.

The difficult decisions just keep getting passed down the chain.

And we're the lucky ones; we can evaluate the decision based solely on what's best for the kids, who are normal kids. We aren't in a position of wondering about a job, or dealing with a special needs kid, etc.

The real pain from all of this is being, and will continue to be, felt so disproportionately.

Very few issues to date in this school year. A few cases. But not many. We were doing a hybrid model. Half in person. Half remote. It was working.

I have a democrat governor. Then I get a democrat president elect. Then I get full remote learning, quickly followed by no more athletics. Coincidence?
Believe it or not, I am going to give you a respectful response.
You live in a state where over 2.5 million people voted for Trump. Surely at least one of them contracted the virus irresponsibly, and then irresponsibly passed it on to others, who passed it on to others, who passed it on to others, etc. That's at least a PARTIAL reason why YOU are dealing with the shit you have to deal with - and I am not saying YOUR shit isn't valid in terms of your venting.
While YOU may see things working somewhat smoothly, clearly others in your state are not.
If things seem to be working in your town/county - then why try and "fix" them in your town/county? I get that and it probably should be decided on a county by county basis but.... another problem is people are free to go from county to county so you really don't know if and when a "major" outbreak will occur and you can't really prep for it and it's not something you can fix with a flip of a switch.
What are the numbers? 8000 dead with (not necessarily "from") Covid, and now an average of about 10,000 new cases a day in Michigan? Clearly something(s) is NOT working smoothly in your state.
I feel it's a lose lose situation no matter who is making the decisions. Republican/s or Democrat/s.
People will suffer in different ways no matter what is decided and by whom.

We're going to lose a half million citizens, a year of our lives, and perhaps our standing at the top of the mountain globally, because Trump was some combination of incompetent and disinterested.

In my mind the children are the least at risk. But they are the ones most affected by the restrictions. At least in my corner of the world they are.

Unless you're intending on some Lord of the Flies shit, though, they also bring the virus home.

There's not a great answer - it would sure be a start if the adults would agree to curtail all their discretionary indoor activities in order to try to keep schools open.

What is a nurse supposed to say to these people? Fine, you're not dying of Covid if that's what you choose to believe - I hope that brings you comfort and makes your suffering and soon to be death more tolerable for you?

Truly sucks for some reasons to be a kid in this country right now but it's hard for me not to think about how there is a really good chance they will live to see 25,000 or so tomorrows and their lives can and will be better in the not too distant future.
I can't recall if it was you or someone else who said months ago something basically to the degree of fuck old people, who cares? they are going to die anyways.
Again, I can and do sympathize about what the kids are going through right now but I also am faced every day thinking about, hearing about, and seeing my 87 year old widowed mother who won't live to see 25,000 more tomorrows, who lives alone pretty much isolated, who regularly attended classes at Northwestern, went to the symphony, went to the movie theatre, went out for meals with her friends, traveled to Arizona to stay with friends, went to visit her daughter, nieces, nephews, grandkids, fed the homeless twice or more a month, volunteered at various charitable organizations, etc., etc., etc. who was enjoying her "golden year/s" and was a productive member of society, and how she too is severely "affected" by restrictions right now.
It sucks for pretty much all of us. For different VALID reasons.

Yeah, I'm more concerned about my parents than myself, but I still don't want to be hospitalized for 4-5 days. I'm pretty healthy, eat healthy, but don't exercise enough. I haven't been to my gym since March. I walk my dog, use my weight bench some and bike occasionally if the weather is nice. Just tough.

Now that Winter is setting in, it's going to get really tough getting any meaningful exercise. And I keep reading about another "hoarding" episode coming, so is it time to go stock up on TP and canned foods again? Getting real sick of this shit!

And those of you with kids, I feel for you. So many hard decisions to make that your kids probably won't like, but as a parent, you've got to do what you feel is the best to protect them in the long run.

Our school district just announced that the kids won't be going back to in-person school after Thanksgiving. The announcement says it's going to be a two-week pause, but...come on. This means they're home until at least January 5.

Which I'm fine with. Cases all over our district and in our neighborhood.

Just got this email from management:

“Lots of guests from TX are calling and saying, “everything’s fine in Texas and our state is completely reopen, we just want to know what’s going on in CO...”

but all management was asking us to do is confirm what cancellation policy they were quoted before granting refunds.
