And aren’t the risks of the vaccine offset by the risks of the virus?

If the COVID vaccine actually was deadly, then I would be 100% for forced inoculation.

but, but...jenny mccarthy

sadly, much like most of the topics lobster posts about, he is similarly either uninformed or misinformed about covid and vaccinations in general

it’s amazing, really, the need to feel special is so strong, that someone can completely disregard the opinions of folks whose very careers and livelihoods depend on being informed and trusted in such matters

I bet the kids that were paralyzed from the first polio vaccine would consider it a long term side effect.....so would the 10 or whatever kids that died.

in the modern era, though, phd is correct

citing those examples is like saying that people have died from getting antivenom treatments after a venomous snakebite. sure, it has happened, but that was several decades ago before we had “perfected” the technology

modern vaccines aren’t the same as those that were originally used on polio...largely because we have the FDA, and stringent protocols in place (three phases of trials AFTER extensive animal testing) to ensure safety and efficacy

Salk was literally experimenting on people before regulations against such things were in place

They were given live virus. That's not a vaccination, that's a mistake.

It's also completely irrelevant here since they're not using killed viruses for covid, so that mistake isn't even a possibility here.

Also, the polio vaccine eradicated polio WORLDWIDE. Half a million people used to be paralyzed or die from polio every year now the number is essentially zero.

10 people died due to a huge mistake so that 30,000,000+ could be saved. Do the math about which option is better.

You're the one who ALWAYS says guns don't kill people, people do....well in this case, vaccines didn't kill anyone, people did. People die from uncooked chicken too, you gonna quit eating? Are you anti-food?

Arguing against vaccines because of the Cutter incident is like arguing against huminitarian aid because a plane crashed once delivering aid. Especially when, here, the plane has been taken out of the equation. There is neither a killed virus nor an attenuated virus being used. So it is safer.

There us no mechanism for these vaccines to cause long term side effects....mRNA or protein doesn't last very long. And there have been zero deaths attributable to the vaccines and we're 50 million+ vaccines in.

Mark Zuckerberg's comments could very likely be full of shit, but it's hilarious to see him saying that back in July. His own platform would not allow you to say that now. However, I highly doubt he is giving the vaccine to his children, as he doesn't even allow them to use smartphones or facebook.

Perspective.

Two current situations........

87 year old woman. Has a daughter, son-in-law, and niece who are all extremely ill.
The 3 of them live out of town.
87 year old woman hasn't been able to get on a plane to go visit them because A) SHE can't afford to get the virus and B) THEY can't afford to contract the virus from her.
87 year old woman has now been vaccinated.
87 year old woman told me she's desperate to go visit them - "before I (or they) die".
87 year old woman felt getting the vaccination was the difference between her wanting to continue to live her life - or not.
Would rather be dead than feel she can't see and be with those she loves - soon.
Also has grandchildren and great grandchildren she wondered if she would ever see again.
Now she has hope.

40 year old woman.
Doesn't care if she gets the virus. She's not getting vaccinated. Doesn't want anyone "putting poison" in her body. Forgetting the fact that she eats shit food, drinks shit drinks, smokes cigarettes, and puts "poison" in her body HERSELF.
Fully realizes she can get the virus and spread the virus to others. Attitude is too bad - who the heck cares what happens to others? I'm going to live my life as I choose.
My hope is she nor anyone else has to deal with the fact that forgetting about yourself, when you spread the virus to someone you care about and they have complications from it, if you are a decent person who has even an ounce of compassion - it should crush you.

Bolded part is what I have a problem with.

Most of us have gotten 16-25 vaccines in our lives and they helped keep us healthy. Now there is a vaccine that can end the pandemic and people are iffy on it and make up that vaccines are poison.

Vaccinated people can still spread the virus. People who get flu shots can still spread the flu.

Not necessarily. Many people get more ill after having a flu shot.

That's not known yet, but will be soon.

It seems almost certain that if you are vaccinated you'd harbor a lower viral load and for a shorter period of time. It's entirely possible the virus is unable to replicate to numbers that would make infecting another person highly unlikely. It almost definitely will reduce the infectivity if viral titers are lower and more brief than in unvaccinated individuals.
