I think this is a stability pickup. He'll be around. He doesn't expect to play major minutes. Glue guy.

He's 6'3 and can shoot. Former 4 star guard. Didn't do anything worth getting excited about in his first 2 years, but plans on redshirting. Could be a good college player in his 4th and 5th years

But yes, it's a stability thing

he had an offer from KU initially, back in 2020, along with ‘zona, arkansas, memphis, and others

per 247:

Shelby is one of the better long distance shooters in his class. He makes any man to man defense stretch out against any zone. He is one who needs to be shaded and accounted for at all times because he is great at catching and shooting off penetration from one of his teammates. He will need to work on improving his athletiscism and continue to hone his ball handling skills when under intense ball pressure. He is steadily improving in learning the nuances of the game from the lead guard spot. However, coaches mainly see his ability to stretch the floor as a key translatable asset. His shot range is beyond 22 feet and is pretty to watch with excellent rotation and back spin.

there’s gotta be more to his story, unless he’s just one of those guys that peaked in hs and was an over-rated recruit

Shelby appeared in 14 games off the bench during the 2022-23 season at Vanderbilt. There, he averaged 3.7 points and nine minutes per game. He shot 31.4% from the field and 31.1% from behind the arc.

Makes no sense. To me. For him. Unless he is getting a nice paycheck - to come to practices.

Good thread!

But yea, I think this just addresses our lack of “small”/on-ball lead guards on the roster, and prob just a practice player.

Prob means we missed out on better small guards in the portal too

As some fans (and even announcers) would have it, this is the second Shelby of the Bill era.
