why does Ukraine (and Sweden and Finland) want to join NATO?
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

or, more likely, they’ve seen putin’s actions over the past ~25 years and aren’t enamored (to put it lightly) with his sphere of influence

Lemme ask this (again)

Why should we accept the us and nato’s prescribed narrative about Ukraine when the us and nato are, as DCHawk so eloquently put it, the same bunch of dipshits who sold us the prescribed narrative about WMDs in Iraq?

Bro we’ve been over this. Actually, youre struggling, once again, to distinguish valid criticism of our own warmongering, from bad guy propaganda.

And actually, I stopped to take a leak in silverthorne. Now fueling up in Leadville.

The pass between copper and Leadville always cuts out of cell phone/Spotify signal so I’ve found if you put on a long enough song, you can keep tunes going til you’re back in cell service.

So I swapped out 6/10/73 to instead jam out a 30 minute Tweezer. Sorta become a tradition.

Wrong Iraq War analogy. The current Ukraine situation is closer to the 1991 scenario. “Insane dictator attacks neighbor”. Only difference now is that we didn’t equip said insane dictator.

pretty sure that what Gates is gearing up to do too tho

we are too intertwined in globalization.

We could all benefit from being more localized with our food production and consumption.

Won't happen, we're too far down the road and too many cities that are too big to make that possible.

Just saying, world would be better off and more sustainable that way and people would be more aware and connected to their food and the land that creates it.

i definitely don’t disagree with your latter point

i’m not ready to villainize gates just yet…time will tell. it would seem better than what has been happening lately, with citizens of other countries buying up large swaths of land or our own agricultural products (and water resources) being diverted to subsidize livestock overseas

the history of agricultural industrialization in the US is quite fascinating, actually

"This model would alleviate the incredible pressure on our recruiters, lower the cost of finding new troops, and significantly reduce the much decried civilian-military gap by subjecting all of America's youth -- rich and poor -- to the possibility of military service via the draft.

This increased public interest might also have the added effect of increasing public pressure to prevent open-ended wars led by unaccountable senior leaders like we experienced in our national debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Yeah, fuck off with that. I wonder what the drop in volunteer numbers would be if they instituted a draft. You think American confidence in its military is at a low now? Start forcing more college aged kids to lose pace with their peers in their pursuit of their careers by drafting them and making them serve in the military.

Take the billions of dollars hemorrhaging out of the defense budget into the pockets of defense contractors and spend it on recruitment. Like every other job out there, PAY MORE and people will take those jobs.

The article doesn't specify but I suspect no college kids are going to get drafted.

"College aged". Kids that age that are laying the groundwork, trying to build their future. Hitting the pause button on that process, whatever it may be, puts them behind their peers they are competing against in their career paths. If they aren't going to college them maybe they are working towards careers that require apprenticeships, internships etc... and being multiple years behind may be seen as crippling their careers before it even starts. If you want to be a plumber, an electrician, or some other field that doesn't require a college degree specifically.

Otherwise, they are just going to remain stuck with kids that have a higher percentage of people who aren't smart enough to pass the military entrance exam.

What I am getting at, rather poorly it seems, is that wealthy kids who are working towards their future will be far less likely to be selected than their poorer counterparts. At least that is how it worked in the past.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that college students would most likely not be eligible for a draft were it to happen for the exact reasons that you stated. The power brokers pushing such a change through were it to happen would never want THEIR kids sent off to serve in the military, but they would be fine with kids they see as "less valuable" i.e. "just a plumber".
