Interesting article by Seth Davis regarding shoe companies and university relations.

Mike Brey at Notre Dame says shoe companies and coaches talk all the time. More than coaches talk with recruits and families. If they consider any contact between the shoe companies and coach to be booster material it's going to be tricky. He says he contacts his Under Armour rep all the time at AAU tournaments to get word out there about UA and Notre Dame. He says that happens very frequently.

Also a former NCAA enforcement agent who now represents universities in infraction cases says NCAA is on a slippery slope. And that it would have far reaching impacts. She basically said a contract and communication between employees and coaches and ADs should not be considered booster material.

The selective enforcement pisses us all off. There was more evidence that Nike paid more money. They just want to ignore other evidence like Avenatti brought up by focusing on booster crap. They all literally contact their sponsors because they are contractually tied.

This egregious conduct by Kansas involves 3 players:

1. First one never played college basketball as he was held out first by KU (after being cleared by NCAA) and situation was reported to NCAA. NCAA declared ineligible after season.

2. Second one was held out by Kansas until the NCAA cleared him. He was then suspended by NCAA, held out by Kansas, and then reinstated.

3. Third one was cleared, never investigated, and played college basketball. For Duke.


These are facts.

Obviously, the NCAA plays by its own rules, but the NCAA only cites to the trial evidence, which is fucking nothing, and NCAA lacks a smoking gun. Just like the defendants lacked a smoking gun.

I understand there is a difference between what can they "prove" and what is the "truth".

I think the truth is closer to what the ncaa alleges.

I think what can they "prove beyond a reasonable doubt" is closer to how you feel about this.

I love the defiance...if I were Coach Self and they suspended him, I would continue to coach, on the court. The NCAA as an organization is probably going to be disbanded sometime soon anyway, so there's no way I wouldn't be coaching out there. They would have to pull me off the court.

They thought they had a patsie, but made a bad choice. KU has legal remedy in a case like this because the NCAA chose to look the other way at favored schools. It materially damages KU. Again. For following an abundance of caution and being already damaged.

To the extent that there were violations committed — and Kansas did not withhold, for no reason, Billy Preston from competition in November 2017, then watch him leave two months later to sign a pro contract without a resolution of his eligibility case — there needs to be appropriate punishment.

this article seems to suggest KU withholding Billy Preston was evidence in itself of a violation? And not a good faith self-reporting (and de facto self-imposed suspension/eventual declaration of ineligibility) of a violation (that according to an FBI trial we didn't know about?)

I know I'm biased, but where's the abundance of logic in that?

Think you have it confused Oussie. He says NCAA is confident, but logic is not abundant.

I think the tide is slowly going to KUs way on this in the national preception. Their response was full of statements that Kansas basically did everything right when they found out things were going haywire. They sat Preston, they fought and got appeal repealed with Silvio and Zion (who is the main piece of the whole thing) never played at Kansas but yet played at Duke.
