So dont go on vacation during the season.

Really though...other than perhaps KU games...why does one need to be connected on vacation? Relax, enjoy it, disconnection is good for the soul.

Leaving social media was one of the greatest choices ive made. Also, one of the best things about elk camp (whether solo or with a couple frienda) is the freedom that comes with complete disconnection from the world, particular the disproportionately hateful and distorted online world.

But potentially devastating to a lot of people’s career.

Mostly those like me whom have “unlimited vacation days.”

Gotcha. In my industry there is no "working from home" etc so I guess i didnt think about a "working" vacation.

I guess there is as far as building schedules and writing contracts etc but i try to ignore all that shit if I'm out of town. I also get a finite amount of days off too so i try to use them to ignore everything outside if my immediate family ha

A lot of negatives to every job. That’s why we don’t do it for free.

I need to be available to work even on vacation for 'emergencies'.
Pretty common with certain jobs these days.

In my experience in the industry, I’d say businessmen who need to be connected for work are only the third most likely demographic to complain, and if they do complain, it’s usually in a reasonable way. They’re the only ones who *need* WiFi, and if they really need WiFi that bad they won’t make a huge deal about just going to a coffee shop for the morning.

The two mostly likely to complain are: sedentary boomers who travel with no interest in pursuing the unique activities and hobbies available in an area (or rather whose only apparent hobby is nitpicking their lodging accommodations), and spoiled tweens who wanna spend their entire vacay playing video games (and whose parents are the type to let their tween spend their entire vacay playing video games, and also the type who is OK with letting their tween go throw a tantrum to the front desk)

For the parents with teens crowds, I'd surmise that most of them are choosing the path of least resistance.

I.e. I wonder if it's great for kids to be in front of an iPad screen all day, but it sure beats listening to them bitch during my vacation/meal/etc.

If there wasn't such thing as internet in hotels (or via hotspots, etc.), I would just not ever be able to go on vacation.

Not to get on a full-on "OK boomer" rant, but the response to millenials being seen as "always connected" has, in some people's logic, given the thumbs up for "you better respond no-matter-fucking-when-and-what!"

Not as much a problem now as when I was much lower on the ladder, but one of the most infuriating personalities to deal with is a person with authority over me who demands 24/7 responsiveness, but himself or herself cut their teeth in an era where there that was not just unexpected, but impossible.

ousdahl wrote: Thu Mar 05, 2020 2:24 pm soo I was gonna ask this in the tourists thread, but since y’all killed that thread, let’s just ask here:

If you’re traveling and at your lodging accommodation the WiFi craps out, what is an appropriate reaction and response from a traveler?
Ask what the issue is. Ask if it's going to be fixed. Suggest it should be fixed. If it can't be fixed, reimburse any feed that was paid for WiFi.

In some circumstances, if I was there for work and had to have it, being I'm a Marriott guy, I'd ask to cancel reservation and reimburse room rate and would ask for assistance at booking at another Marriott property.
Entitled MFer.
