"But, he's not coming back. And the fact that he's not coming back makes me absolutely question whether Bill Self believes Udoka can ever give us a full season."

Here's a hottake from pdub on the same thread:

"Dok looking to play at a better weight.
If he can actually execute those shots in the game, he has AA candidacy."

On the other hand, here's a bad hottake from pdub:

"Chai will improve a lot I expect.
I think he could end up on an all B12 team at the end of next season."
I think a lot of us would have said the same thing about ochai last march. I was expecting something more like ben mclemore. shooting and athleticism on display all season

Since Bill benched him for 1 start, Dok has been a great player. I didn't care for him the last 3 years. Just unskilled at nearly every facet of the sport.

I liked him but he frustrated me. He now has become the rebound eating, 1.75 pps scoring, shot altering beast we need to win a title. If he hits fts like he did against okie st hes nearly unstoppable at the college level....assuming the guards can get him the ball

Pps =points per shot. Is there a better way to say this? PPFGA seemed worse.

Dok has been awesome. Big men have feet and or leg problems so his injuries are not concerning. He is just in awesome shape. The loss of Hudy has been underestimated. lol

Pretty sure I said last yeat "Just need Dok and Dotson back the rest didn't matter"

This Doke is unreal. Changed the trajectory of our program, and of his own career.

It's like watching Shaq right now. There's no one equipped to single-cover him.

And we are doing a better job putting him into position so that he has to be doubled.
( i.e. using the threat of what he can do to open ourselves up and then, upon adjustment, get the ball back to him )

I still don't think this is a great passing team. His numbers are probably NPOY on the '18 team--distributor PG and surrounded by shooters. MG better at getting to the rim than Malik, though.

This offense is not a lot of fun to watch, and it would be completely unwatchable without Udoka.

Yes. Putting Marcus on the ball in the middle (which, it should be noted, is a not-insignificant sacrifice on Dot's part) has unlocked a different level offensively.

We should probably be thanking Scott Drew for clownsuiting Bill in January.

I was thinking about this last night but didn't really publicize it.

Drew made Self and KU go significantly 1 big lineups. Also changed the offense a bit to have Dok screen middle of the floor to allow Dotson to attack with either hand.

Self used to run so many side ball screens, and teams are starting to pick up on that and keeps KU on that side of the floor. Now that he has Dok setting the screen at top of the key, it opens up so much more space and allows Dotson to be great at what he does best.

That's what makes Self great. He's stubborn enough to keep his principles (which are very good) but humble enough to say that he got his ass kicked and he needs to change some things up.

honestly I think we are doing a better job of putting him in position where he can't be doubled. self has done an unbelievable job of tweaking the offense (mainly the ball screen angles) so that so many of dok's touches he basically just catches and dunks. either turns and dunks or catches the lobs.

and then like you said - when that isn't there he is posting up more in the middle with more space where its easier for him to pass out of double teams and we adjust

The big 12 award I haven't heard mentioned?? Big 12 coach of the year: Bill self

Scott drew did a great job with baylor. I'd understand if he got it. You could try to give it to bill every year. you could argue lebron for mvp every year. those awards get spread around. someday the Big 12 coach of the year award might be called the bill self award who knows.

but does anyone else think this season might be bills best work?

Think Udoka gets CPOY. Dot has better chance for NPOY.

this would make sense considering Dok’s late season (conference) improvement

Dok was fronted by three inside yesterday and often all five would collapse on him if he got the feed. That was a monster game under the circumstances. So he has improved immensely and probably deserves POY for the Big XII.
