DC is exactly right. The great challenge will be bed space in hospitals for the most ill. We don’t have a choice but to try to slow its spread. This question is on top of a lot less inpatient availability anyway due to market forces.

I understand this is a new virus without a vaccine but I don't think it will kill 80,000 Americans.

Do I think that having March Madness open to the public will cause some death from the virus?
Very likely.
Is that alone enough to cancel it? For me, no, people are going to die from other things involved with March Madness, including seasonal flu, car accidents and heart attacks.
It's bizarre that you think number of deaths is the only measure of its impact.

It's like you've assiduously avoided reading anything at all about the virus, its treatment, or its impact on health care services. You should stop that.
I've read enough - i've read this article along with others so let's calm down on assuming you are some sort of expert. I'm certainly not going to go into your normal routine of 'you don't know as much as I do' and then proceed to copy and paste some article you read as if it was your own.

My point still stands - I don't think it will have a worse fatality rate than the seasonal flu in 2017-2018.
I don't think cancelling March Madness will do that much to sway that number one way or the other.

I'm also going to ask, as others have, that this discussion ( of the impact of the virus or what to do unless it directly relates to march madness ) continue more over here:

Than this bored.

I find it interesting among my circle of associates that the same people who are constantly harping about overpopulation and limited planetary resources are now in a panic about what could be argued to be, from an evolutionary perspective, a standard thinning of the herd by Mother Nature. I'm not hoping that people die, but these things are not unusual historically. Calm. Down.

If I thought I were an expert, I would have told you to listen to me not to read what others are saying.

But this isn't just about the virus.

Let's have that discussion on Off Topic please.
I'm going to try and keep this bored about basketball.

Lol, what? You read the same material as others, others are saying we should probably listen to the experts, however you say we should not listen to the experts, and chastise those actually paying attention to the damn WHO and CDC*? Okay then. I'm genuinely confused.

I don't think our team would respond well to an empty Fieldhouse.

Hypothetical: the tourney gets canceled, the NCAA desiring to name a champion, opts to have a coaches vote on the best team. We are selected as the champion.

Do you accept that? Does that feel like a short changing? Won’t other teams point to the asterisk and downplay our accomplishment?

I personally feel that would suck.

No tourney means no champion.

Makes empty arenas feel very preferable.

This is akin to the Ivy League tourney, IMO.

If they cancel the tourney they will not crown a mythical NC. There will just be an * next to 2020. No champion.

I say there is a fair chance this thing is played in empty arenas.

I can understand the need/thought process for safety first.

If they want to cancel SXSW, awesome.

Give me the tournament, in all it's glory.
I'm fine with the risks.

Also there's no way the NCAA would give US the chance at being champion by a coaches vote.
What MICHHAWK said, just no champion in 2020.

College football figured it out up to a few years ago. But....we are dumber now than we used to be, so I get it.

Did they? They fumbled (no pun intended) with that for a century and still haven't figured that shit out.

It's also a completely different scenario.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time we hung a banner for an administratively-awarded title.
