PortlandHawk wrote: Wed Mar 11, 2020 11:49 am Hypothetical: the tourney gets canceled, the NCAA desiring to name a champion, opts to have a coaches vote on the best team. We are selected as the champion.

Do you accept that? Does that feel like a short changing? Won’t other teams point to the asterisk and downplay our accomplishment?

I personally feel that would suck.
If you are going to accuse him/her of stealing your questions am I supposed to accuse you of stealing mine?

Does the NCAA announce the Tournament is cancelled before or after Selection Sunday?
If we are the number 1 team in the country do we get a trophy and do we hang a banner?

Makes empty arenas feel very preferable.
College football figured it out up to a few years ago. But....we are dumber now than we used to be, so I get it.
Did they? They fumbled (no pun intended) with that for a century and still haven't figured that shit out.

It's also a completely different scenario.
Fumble caused for similar reasons one could argue.

Scenario different, desired outcome the same.

What MICHHAWK said, just no champion in 2020.
Well, it wouldn't be the first time we hung a banner for an administratively-awarded title.
Right. The fact that there are Helms banners as big as the real banners makes me pretty confident we would embarrassingly hang a 2020 MNC banner.

Yeah. Just don't think it'll be completely cancelled. I think the most extreme thing to happen is limited/no fans. By limited, I mean those sections that each school has allotted. The rest will be empty.

I also tend to think that, in order of likelihood, outright cancellation is at the bottom of the list.

If the NCAA ruled that we were champions because we were the number one team in the land, yup, hang it.

I'd have no issue with it.
They won't though - no way the NCAA gives us that.

If the ncaa de declares us champs then we'd certainly take it but we would hear about it forever. Imagine how much shit KU fans would give any rival program fans if they backed their way into a championship like that.

The NCAA might prefer to make us win six games in empty arenas over being forced to crown our asses.

It would be such a large asterisk. NCAA has only ever declared a men's basketball national champion through its tournament winner.

On your side on the take... BUT....

Staters already do this for the Helms. I’m not going to be bothered in the slightest for jealous ignorance. Both situations are by the governing bodies and nothing of our doing. So to that notion, fuck em.

Helms was no governing body, though.

So far this morning Michigan State and Central Michigan have sent the kids home. All on line or the foreseeable future.

I’m beginning to think complete cancel may not be a stretch.

A mass of classes and dorms are A LOT different than a team of 15 guys, 10 coaches/staff and essential arena personnel.

I get why colleges are sending kids home. There's a mass of humanity everywhere at universities, a basketball team in multiple controlled environments is different.

Can the rest of the NCAA's operation make do without the revenue?

The NCAA had originally scheduled a conference call regarding the NCAA Tournament, but now that's not happening. It's certainly going to be interesting to see how this is all handled with Selection Sunday just a few days away.

The NCAA has canceled a scheduled conference call about the tournament for today.

I have heard they have some sort of "rainy day" fund. But I don't think a complete cancel will happen. It's either going to be played without a full arena, or it's going to be pushed back until April or something like that once it settles down a bit.

But I still think the TV people may want the show to go on or will prevent the NCAA from collecting their money.

I think I read somewhere that 80% of their revenue is generated from the tournament. That is huge for sure. But I hope that is not factored.

I agree it's different but how do you control the "environments" in terms of holding NCAA Tournament games? You are talking travel exposure, lodging exposure, food exposure, venue exposure, and is every single player and coach going to be tested before and during the tournament on a daily basis? What about those they come in contact with? ZERO way to completely "control" all the environments they will/would be exposed to.

Everywhere they go is closely monitored and it's controlled as to where they go.

I'll say this, I bet that letting the athletes be on their own would be far more dangerous and more likely to pick up the virus than playing in an empty arena.
