Social distancing should be effective for flattening the curve. At this point that trumps everything else, so at this point travel restrictions are really just a symptom of social distancing guidelines.Grandma wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 8:52 pm Mjl - Again, semantics and debatable.
Second one - He may have meant and probably did mean international travel restrictions but he didn't use the word international. Regardless, how can you say travel restrictions are useless? Then why have so many countries imposed travel bans if they are useless? To me that implies that it's also worthless to "social distance" and wash our hands - unless I'm just not understanding you - which I'm probably not.
When you're at a point where you can either contain it, or have successfully contained it, explicit travel restrictions make sense. When it's spreading freely throughout the population, travel restrictions ain't gonna do shit to stop it, especially with stay-at-home orders in place, since not traveling is essentially a subset of that.

Whoa whoa. I disagree with your claiming the 2020 GTS title. There was a lot of game left. Since Ive been playing GTS by myself (giving you 100s) in pdubs simulation I think I should claim thay title.

Go read the details on Trump's travel restrictions. They would have made sense if they were an actual ban. Instead, hundreds of thousands of people continued to flow directly between the US and China after his restrictions.Mjl wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 10:25 pmSocial distancing should be effective for flattening the curve. If you ban foreigners but continue to allow US citizens to travel freely then you havent banned anything. You have just stigmatized Chinese nationals in an attempt to make foreigners look like invaders trying to harm the US. That's it. Trump's travel ban wasn't a travel ban; it was a Chinese people ban.

Just curious, when did Fauci join the Corona Virus task force and get a full update on what was going on in China?Grandma wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 5:15 pmSure. Two different quotes. Re: Dumbfuck in charge
Excellent question japhy!
I was unsure so I just looked it up. Seems you may have got me!
Supposedly Trump "established" it on January 29th. Which of course would be AFTER the interview in the tweet.
Not sure how and why Greg Kelly found him and interviewed him BEFORE he was on the "task force".
As far as when he got a full update on what was going on in China, I think we would have to ask him because the information doesn't appear to be available.
It's very possible someone in the White House (associated with the President) reached out to Fauci BEFORE the "task force" was created and it's also very possible that someone did NOT reach out to him. I don't definitively know one way or the other. I also can't say for sure one way or the other what Fauci knew or didn't know about anything COVID-19 related when he did the interview with Kelly.
Regardless of all this, he is an "infectious disease" "expert" and to me he initially publicly downplayed the POTENTIAL of the virus.
Since we may want to cut him some slack for what he said BEFORE he was on the task force how about we think about what he said in mid February AFTER he was put on the "task force"?
"Should I start wearing a mask? Now, in the United States, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to wear a mask."
"I was getting calls from people in Sacramento saying, 'Can I get on an airplane to go to Seattle?'" "Like, what? What does that got to do with anything"?
The danger of the virus is "just minuscule."

There were 1,300 direct flights to 17 cities before President Trump’s travel restrictions. Since then, nearly 40,000 Americans and other authorized travelers have made the trip, some this past week and many with spotty screening.

Trump feels the need to boast at each presser that it was HIM who saved so many lives by instituting the Chinese travel ban (because there really is nothing else he can compliment himself on) and yet as Feral brought up......

Dawsey isn't too sharp. President hasn't had any "public events" scheduled for days.
"Task force" is now scheduled for a presser at 7:00pm Eastern time this evening. Originally is was scheduled for 3:30pm.

Re: Dumbfuck in charge
He's talking about two different things. But, he could have been mistaken, or, perhaps someone prone to impulsivity* changed their mind?
lid
A term used by White House press secretaries to indicate that there will be no news coming out of the White House that day. It can also be called a ‘Full Lid.’
A lid is typically called when the White House does not want to release any information about a key topic. They call a lid to give notice to journalists that no questions will be answered.
Although the term has been around for decades, it was popularized by fictional Press Secretary C.J. Cregg on TV show The West Wing.
*impulsivity (or impulsiveness)
is a tendency to act on a whim, displaying behavior characterized by little or no forethought, reflection, or consideration of the consequences.[1] Impulsive actions are typically "poorly conceived, prematurely expressed, unduly risky, or inappropriate to the situation that often result in undesirable consequences,"[2] which imperil long-term goals and strategies for success.[3]...
