Since it is FDA approved, that’s kind of a moot point.
The FDA has approved it for treatment of specific illnesses. Viral infection treatment (as far as I know) IS NOT ON THE APPROVED LABEL. What Trump is doing is called off-label promotion and there are specific laws against it.

A physician may prescribe for experimental treatment but that requires the execution of an Informed Consent with the patient which has been reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board and often related filings or Amendments of Investigational New Drug Application (IND) with the FDA.

Pretty clear - the administration is reacting to criticism over not moving more quickly.

Really?

That's funny, because before I saw this post, I copied that tweet to quote, with a comment along the lines of:

Wow! Damn. Wouldn't it be nice to have a test to screen them appropriately?

...The USCG announced this weekend that 114 cruise ships with 93,000 crew members on board were off the coast of the United States. The overwhelming majority of them – up to 90 – are in the Miami USCG area of responsibility, per USCG.

South Florida could be the most impacted by new restrictions on cruise travelers

Miami is the cruising capital of the world, with millions of passengers traveling through the Port of Miami every year.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced new rules for cruise line passengers overnight, requiring people to travel by charter flight and private transportation. Upon arrival home, the traveler must isolate for 14 days.

And South Florida could be the area of the country that is most impacted by the new CDC guidelines.

The USCG announced this weekend that 114 cruise ships with 93,000 crew members on board were off the coast of the United States. The overwhelming majority of them – up to 90 – are in the Miami USCG area of responsibility, per USCG.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, expressed concern in a press conference this weekend, saying that he is trying to talk to the cruise lines to get crew members home.

“What we were trying to do with a cruise ships is a lot of them are out there with their crew and we're trying to tell the cruise industries, they need to start getting those healthy crew members, off the ships and just keep a very, very skeleton crew to operate the ship so that if anything does happen on any particular ship, the exposure to people is a heck of a lot less,” Gimenez said.

Silberman obviously has a political axe to grind, as does everyone who is flipping out about the chloroquine issue. Sadly, he is much more likely to die because he is morbidly obese than anything else.

Only 10,000?
The CDC has the number of deaths from the most recent flu virus as 24,000-63,000.

Nearly half the supply of hydroxychloroquine to the U.S. comes from makers in India, a flow that has now been abruptly stanched after the Asian nation banned exports of all forms of the malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump as a “game changer” for treating the coronavirus.

According to data compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence, 47% of the U.S. supply of the drug last year came from India makers. Only a handful of suppliers in the top 10 are non-Indian, such as Actavis, now a subsidiary of Israeli generics giant Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. It’s likely that some of their production facilities are nevertheless located in India, the biggest maker of generic drugs in the world.

India’s export ban on the drug is aimed at ensuring it has enough supply for domestic use after the American president’s endorsement sparked global stockpiling of the medication. As the coronavirus pandemic widens globally, countries competing for supplies have enacted export bans or restrictions on goods from rice in Vietnam to face masks in Germany.
