Also, Id rather help hospitals than airlines. Let the airlines fail, save the hospitals. It just seems like an odd thing to be upset about.

the airlines wouldn't necessarily fail. They would simply have to sell some stocks and/or put assets down as collateral to get a bank loan, except that big business hates capitalism.

Why then are the hospitals not taking "elective" surgeries and laying people off? Is there some mandate that they commit financial suicide or are people just not going to the doctor?

I have a buddy in iowa that is an ear/nose/throat surgeon. Same thing. Hes had 2 surgeries since this started that was allowed to be performed.

not your mistake at all, just difficult to read between the lines

my wife was supposed to have a second eye surgery right before shit hit the fan...like, second week of march i think. it’s deemed “elective” and so was postponed indefinitely. utah, and SLC is in pretty good shape as far as covid-based strain on the local healthcare system, but 1) better to be safe than sorry as far as subjecting one’s self to elevated risk unnecessarily, and 2) no need to pull resources (PPE and people) from the “front lines” for non-essential proceedures

Another source I came across said that in 2009, there were 48 million surgeries performed in the US.
(Don't know if that was only hospital-based surgeries, or if it included ambulatory surgery centers too. My guess is, that the figure includes both.)
