I have zero faith that there ever will be a "comprehensive federally-supported testing regime" under this current administration. They have done nothing in their handling of this pandemic to this point that leads me to believe they are capable, or even interested, in that.

Waiting for the clueless to get a clue would mean that we'd never leave our houses.

Agreed. I am glad I don't live in a large city in Georgia. It stresses me out to think about who before me might have picked up the apple I just bagged up to take home and I live in a city that has only been touched lightly by this. I guess I will add "less affected by a pandemic" to the "Pro" column of living in living in a city that doesn't have a significant amount of international flights coming in.

My heart goes out to the people who are struggling right now. Being broke is greaking scary, especially if you have others you are financially responsible for. Being broke and out of work for the foreseeable future, not having decent medical insurance if any, all while being surrounded by people who are getting sick. It has got to be horrifying.

At this point, all I can do is sit back and watch it unfold. At every level of our government, from local to state to federal,, we could have been better prepared and we could have acted in a more serious, responsible manner at an earlier point and I can only hope that future leaders at every level do a more thorough review of their preparedness for events such as this.

As I watch the death toll climb, I feel guilty having enjoyed the extra time I have had with my kids while we're all locked in the house together.

Weird times that I will never forget, that's for sure. I need to go for a ride today and clear my mind.

My worthless thoughts:

Georgia governor is an idiot. He's proved this at least twice in the last 3 weeks.

This is not a partisan issue, and shouldn't be, even though some (ousdahl types) try hard to make it one....almost everyone I know is taking this seriously and socially distancing themselves. I know a few people who aren't...yes, some are uneducated republicans...but some are also liberals who share things that would lead you to believe they're on the smart side of this, but then post themselves at a small dinner gathering at their house...or having a picnic with another mom and their kids....which is almost as dumb as protesting. Enough on those types. They are a small minority.

Just because GA governor says things can open doesn't mean business owners HAVE to open if they're in the group (most of us it seems like) that think it's too soon. And they shouldn't. I've seen several interviews with a few business owners in the states rushing to open that indicate if they see a spike they will shut their business back down even if there isn't an order from state/local officials to do so. Hats off to them. Profits over people is dumb way to deal with a global pandemic. I am hopeful that many/most business owners in these states make the smart choice even if their governor makes the dumb choice.

We can't stay closed forever. We can't enforce a country wide lock down anyway. Freedom to choose is a real thing. Hopefully most people choose the correct thing, which is to stay home for another month so that the number of people infected continues to drop.

Hope everyone is staying safe/smart. I'm the only 1 that has left my house for more than a month (other than wife/kids riding bikes/going on walks)...that is a different kind of pressure to say the least...thankfully I only NEED to be in the office a few hours a week, so our exposure is relatively low. Thankful we can do that. Kids are having fun staying up late and playing most of the day. Wife is staying relatively sane. Our recycling looks like we're running an underground bar out of our basement.

The thing about Georgia is that that the biggest hotspot is in Albany, a town of about 75,000 south of Atlanta where infections happened at 2 funerals--super spreader events--from late February and early March and originally from a man who was not known to have traveled anywhere. (A neighbor is a retired health systems person from Georgia who has followed this).

Airports aren't the problem.

One-off super-spreader events; cramped "essential businesses" (meat-packing plants); collective living (nursing homes mostly); and public transportation (subways) have been the problem.

That and healthcare providers being infected while trying to save lives.

Trump's standard response/deflection to nearly all questions he doesn't want to answer about the pandemic is for him to invoke: "I shut down China", as if it were some game-changing, decisive action. But, he didn't "shut down China" effectively, so when he brings it up constantly, journalists challenge him on it. And, you and DC both agree that even if he had effectively "shut down China", it wouldn't have made that much difference. So, if he stops bringing it up, there's no need for a "revision".

But, speaking of "revisionist history":

I'm just fine raking China over all this and more, but we saw big backlash over the use of "China Virus" months after it was known as "Wuhan Virus" in the rest of the world. No outrage until Trump did it.

I honestly don't understand how nearly any of the states/governors can make ANY decisions on a statewide level. Most states have such a wide variety of population density in different counties/area/regions of the state. there just aren't a lot of "1 size fits all" states.
