Happy Earth Day!!

Post by Deleted User 89 »

50 years

pessimistic me says we’re actually worse off than we were 50 years ago

optimistic me hopes...

get outside, hug a tree, smell the flowers, listen to the birds, play in the dirt, bask in the sun...appreciate that you can still enjoy such things

No doubt Mother Nature is much worse off than 50 years ago -- more plastics, more spills, more wars, more species extinguished, etc., etc. At root, more humans. It won't get better.

That said, we're fortunate to still be able to enjoy her. One thing that's striking -- without all the traffic, the birds' songs are really notable. In the very early morning, they're at full throat. It's beautiful.

Happy Earth Day, Traddy.
Please, I implore you to be reasonable...

yeah earth!

driving home last night I saw ubiquitous mule deer, 4 different bachelor groups of bull elk including one pair I almost hit cuz they were hanging out along the road right in town, and a herd of bighorn sheep so dense that their crossing a road caused traffic to stop for several minutes.

The bighorns all look like some kind of horror movie characters or something, as they're all skinny and shedding their winter coats and look undead. ZOMBIE SHEEP!

The elk are so cool, cuz even having already shed their antlers, they're still just so damn huge. I'd like to go shed hunting some time, but now there's a season for it in CO, which doesn't open til the 1st.

Yeah, apparently the last decade or so it’s skyrocketed in popularity, and with the popularity comes the idiots.

The department of wildlife imposed the season, to protect the animals. Apparently too many shed hunters were intruding upon wintering range and displacing herds, and the critters are already so stressed by the scarce food and cold temps that they don’t need humans chasing them around too.

Having lived in both places, Oregon’s outdoors culture is awesome. But Colorado’s is on another level, for better or worse. You can’t underestimate the volume of human activity on public land here.

Especially the last decade or so, there’s been a yuge number of folks moving from places like the boring Midwest to here, explicitly to recreate.

But not me. I got here way before it got too cool.

Oh! But regarding shed hunting - with all that said, I dunno how they can really enforce it. It would have to be some egregious red-handed kind of sitch.

If you do come across one before season, you’re supposed to just leave it. Hopefully there are a lot of good faith shed hunters who actually wait til the 1st to boogie on back to get it, but I kind of doubt it.
