But I also think that the knee-jerk reaction to assume that teachers are uniformly underpaid and underappreciated is the result of political mythologizing.

Your post is exactly why people say teachers are "underappreciated." Yes, the school year is 9 months long. But I don't know a teacher who doesn't spend an entire summer working/prepping for the upcoming year or doing summer school. No to mention being a teacher is hardly a 40-hour a week job.
