F the NCAA
Re: F the NCAA
I'd rather just have the G League take off.
That'd be sweet.
Go Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Hell yes.
New arena in Leawood.
New arena in Leawood.
Re: F the NCAA
Yes, they're allowed to work camps and things like that (which are paid), but there's some sort of "fair value" test. Obviously N/I/L is fundamentally different from that; you're not being paid $10k for two hours of your time for a photo shoot, you're being paid for what the sponsor will use those photos for.TraditionKU wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 3:24 pmcan student athletes get paid summer internships related to their degrees?jfish26 wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 1:50 pm(Did that work?)PhDhawk wrote:
I guess - so what if the opportunity to make money while in school is used in recruiting?
Take my industry.
Law schools compete with each other, both for new students and in rankings/awards/etc.
It is not controversial or "bad" or whatever when law schools compete against each other, in recruiting, by pointing to how many of their students get high-paying internships while in school.
It is not controversial or "bad" or whatever, in law schools, that some students make like $3k/week during their summer internships, and some make $0.
(honest question)

So, it's not cool if Rhett Bomar clocks in once a week and gets paid $20,000 for the summer?
Re: F the NCAA
Yes. They pay everyone at the same rate. But haven’t been able to find anyone else as qualified yet. But are actively looking.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 4:47 pm So, it's not cool if Rhett Bomar clocks in once a week and gets paid $20,000 for the summer?

Wasn't that an Oklahoma car dealer?
I couldn't remember the QB's name.

This still blows my mind. "Works" at a car dealership then transfers to Sam Houston St. Watched him put up about 600 total yards himself against NDSU and people couldn't wrap their heads around why he couldn't be stopped, completely unaware to the fact he was the starting QB at Oklahoma the previous year.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 4:47 pm So, it's not cool if Rhett Bomar clocks in once a week and gets paid $20,000 for the summer?

Re: F the NCAA
I watched Bomar in the KU-OU game at Camarohead. Ugly ass game where almost no one scored. I also picked up an MIP.
Anyway, he played so well later that year I thought he was a future Heisman winner. Became infamous for something else.

Re: F the NCAA
You can argue forever, but the bottom line is that if you take the top 25, 50, 100 kids each year out of the mix, one of two things will happen. One, the next best will be highly sought after, and illicit money will change hands to get them to the top programs, so they remain the best and so tv money and advertising money and shoe/apparel money will continue to flow in to the sport and the top programs. Maybe it is less money, maybe not. Two, the money dries up, tv contracts go away, we all listen to radio broadcasts, maybe part of the NCAA tournament gets on espn like the college baseball regionals and the college baseball world series.
Re: F the NCAA
Or millions of scenarios in between.
So like one of one million and two things happen.

Sigh. If only KU had an offense that day. The defense played lights out and shut down AD.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2020 11:30 am I watched Bomar in the KU-OU game at Camarohead. Ugly ass game where almost no one scored. I also picked up an MIP.

Took a party bus home that day. Yelled at a bunch of Sooner fans out the window and then some where between LAWRENCE and KC a chick puked in the back of the bus.

Wrong.
Or incredibly subjective.
Or incredibly subjective.
Re: F the NCAA
Subjective means open to interpretation. "Based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions."
It is objectively true that if you open up a market, you reduce under-the-table behavior.
It is objectively true that if players could make G-League-ish money + benefits in college (which very much includes the cool shit that is unique to college), players would stay in college longer.
It is objectively true that good players staying in college longer results in a better on-court and in-arena product.
It is objectively true that a better on-court and in-arena product means greater visibility and a higher position on the sports totem pole.
That the benefits outweigh the detriments is, I suppose, subjective. But you should recognize that you don't get to use "well that's just your opinion" on all aspects of this issue.

Every other student. So, you want to give them jobs in the campus bookstore? Sure, I'm in.
Just Ledoux it

A computer engineering student who invents a cool app can sell it, and not be locked out of the computer lab.TDub wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 11:05 amEvery other student. So, you want to give them jobs in the campus bookstore? Sure, I'm in.
A law or business student can intern at firms/companies, and make the equivalent of starting salaries, and not be locked out of the library.
A medical student can "moonlight" at a rural hospital and make $2k+/night, and not be locked out of the lecture halls.
Fair doesn't mean equal.

"It is objectively true that if you open up a market, you reduce under-the-table behavior."
It is also objectively true that if you open up a market, you have players and the people around said players, focused more on money than before.
"It is objectively true that good players staying in college longer results in a better on-court and in-arena product."
Subjective. Certainly not objective.
G League pays the players who are right on the verge OR should be in the NBA and those players end up in the G League or ( if the 19 year old rule is eliminated ) the NBA, that might mean more players in college staying in college longer, which means teams can learn to play as a unit over years, rather than adapting one season to the next to a change over of OAD's.
"It is objectively true that a better on-court and in-arena product means greater visibility and a higher position on the sports totem pole."
Don't care about BWW Chad. Why do you so much?
