COVID-19 numbers
Re: COVID-19 numbers
Ok, how come when I look at some of my retirement accounts, when the DJI dropped from ~29,000 to below 20,000 I took a big hit, and then when it rebounded to 24,000 my retirement accounts barely improved?

I agree with you. And I think, both in respect of the market and the economy, the worst is likely yet to come.Mjl wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 12:48 pmSo far, sure. But the market usually looks ahead, and I would think all these unemployed people will not be spending money, which seems like it would hurt a lot of publicly traded companies.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
I'd guess it has to do with the composition of the funds you're in.

I know, and it pisses me off, and seems to always be the case.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
Unfortunately, unless you have the time to do it yourself (or enough scratch to get highly-individualized service), the best answer (assuming you're not particularly close to retirement, and you can do this) is to just keep on throwing money at it.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
Doesn't matter. Market-world and real-world have been disconnected for some time. It's just more obvious now. As long as Uncle Jay and the Fed keep throwing money at corporate debt, there will be opportunities for companies (and, by extension, shareholders) to financialize operations and to eek out relatively favorable results. $5 trillion is a LOT of fucking money.

Russia doesn't need much help. Plenty of Americans already believe the numbers are being inflated as well. Including some rural county Sheriff departments in neighboring counties around me. Those same departments are now also refusing to enforce the governors rules.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
I've also heard the opposite. In fact, Abilene TX got a spike in numbers to where they were 4th in the country in per capita cases. Then they started changing the methods by which they count to immediately fall back out because they didn't want the bad publicity.IllinoisJayhawk wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 10:51 am Russia doesn't need much help. I gotta think there's more pressure to underreport than over report. But it may depend on location.
The numbers of people dying at home has increased. Gotta think some of them are covid, and I don't think they're being included.
The numbers won't be exact.

I'm not too hung up on the "numbers". 20 people have now died from an assisted living facility about 10mins from my house, with somewhere around 100 confirmed positives... so those are all the numbers I need to see to know its real and dangerous.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
Unfortunately, Illy is correct - unless someone who one knows is hospitalized or worse, dies, one will not believe in the numbers, or take the disease, seriously.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
yeah, the rural populations feel isolated from the big urban areas that have thus far been hit the hardest, so they have that "it's in the bit cities but it won't happen here" mentality.
But unfortunately, that was the same mentality exhibited when the rest of the world thought, "it's in China but it won't happen here."

Re: COVID-19 numbers
I don't live in a rural area by any means....and even people here are split on taking it seriously.
Rural areas aren't wrong that they're somewhat insulated from major outbreaks...but they're certainly not immune from smaller outbreaks... and honestly, we've got a smaller town in Illinois that currently has a large cluster of cases related to a meat processing/packing plant.
What I'm sort of shocked by (still) are the people in medium sized/larger IL cities/areas (like mine) that think its only in Chicago. And its people from both political parties....not that I didn't know, but its a great example of how American culture is often "me first" types of attitudes. People inflate or deflate the severity based on what they "want" to be the truth.
Close to retirement = we need to open the economy back up!
Business owner = we need to open the ecomony back up!
The lack of ability to do things for the greater good is astonishing at times.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
Sorry, I forgot my sarcasm font.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
I picked up on the sarcasm. I just don't think everything needs to be "us" vs "them".
I know plenty of Republicans taking this seriously. I know plenty of democrats not taking this seriously or thinking we are being too cautious.
And in general, most people don't understand what "socialism" means and use it incorrectly.
I don't want to live in a socialist country.
I do think some/many aspects of "socialism" are needed and effective for a country like ours.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
An assisted living place near Wichita had 49 of 50 test positive. 8 died. That’s all the headline said. You had to read pretty deep in the story to find that the other 41 fully recovered or were asymptomatic. Not nearly as apocalyptic as the headline would suggest. And that’s by design, unfortunately.IllinoisJayhawk wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 11:17 amYa. That makes sense.PhDhawk wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 11:13 amI've also heard the opposite.
