he does seem to realize that Trump is a shithead both personally and professionally, and doesn't seem to like Trump in the same way much of the MAGA crowd likes him.

But on the other hand, he also seems almost thrilled with Trump, or maybe just some effect of Trump. Instead of just acknowledging he's a shithead, it's like he'd rather normalize the guy, and defend with the vague deflections and the whataboutisms and the lulz.

Maybe it's not the pissed off MAGA basket of deplorables who got Trump elected. It's the DC types apparently too consumed by the sense of winning, or the power grab, or the rallying of the GOP, or the spiting of the libs, or the whatever, to just go ahead and speak up otherwise.
There's a significant difference between being thrilled with Trump and being perpetually annoyed that y'all keep demonstrating over and over and over again why so many people believe that he's not substantively worse than the Dems -- and worse yet, why they are, in many case right.

A fucking dildo admits his own cowardice, projects that on to everyone else in a crowd, bawls when I make fun of him for it, has his tears dried by posters who think that it's MY fault and that it normalizes sumpin' sumpin', and your reaction is to wonder about the lulz.

Nutz.

Also: Maybe it's not the pissed off MAGA basket of deplorables who got Trump elected. It's the DC types apparently too consumed by the sense of winning

If by "DC types" you mean people like me, then, no. There are no "DC types." I'm a party of one.

If by "DC types" you mean George Conway. And Paul Ryan. And Mittens Romney. Then yes. A thousand times yes.
I merely stated that NO ONE else said anything to the person. Why? Maybe they didn't want a confrontation, either. Maybe they liked the confederate flag being flown. I don't freaking know. As you have blabbered on about over and over, I am not a mind reader.

All I meant was that if anyone else had a problem with the behavior of flying a confederate flag down Main Street of that small town, they sure didn't say anything about it. The 10 other adult members of my family who were with me all noticed it as well and we discussed it when we got back to the house because we were so shocked to see that there. Every one of them chimed in with a "no freaking way was I going to open my mouth to that guy" response. Again, not reading their minds, it was an actual conversation.

The nice thing is that for many the American Flag has replaced the Confederate Flag as a sign of ?
Maybe it's not so nice.
As a Kid I was taught the American Flag was to be respected and was a unifier.
As an adult I'm seeing it has the power to be a symbol of defiance and division.
"God Bless America"? To the majority of people who say that these days - my response is - fuck that shit.

A Georgia lawyer from coastal Georgia talks about Ahmaud Arbery's family roots in the U.S.

During the War of 1812, Ahmaud’s Geechee ancestors from Sapelo fought for the United States, even as we alienated all of the unalienable rights endowed upon them by their Creator and so extolled in our country’s founding documents. After the Civil War, Ahmaud’s ancestors bought their lands here as freedmen and paddled from the islands to the mainland in hand-hewn bateaus once every year to dutifully pay their taxes. Despite relentless attempts to steal their land, beat them down, and drive them out, Geechees like Ahmaud’s ancestors thrived and settled throughout the Golden Isles and the mainland, living in harmony with this delicate estuarine ecosystem — fishing, hunting, clamming, crabbing, oystering, and farming — for more than a century before the first industrialists showed up to poison our waters with chemical plants and long before the first snowbirds arrived to convert our community into a sun-soaked playground for the rich and the retired.

Ahmaud’s birthright to this particular place is strong. His people’s fight to maintain their ownership of this particular place is resolute. The dignity and kindness and richness of culture that they have imprinted on this place is indelible. And while that doesn’t give him any greater right to life and justice than any other human anywhere, it does highlight the depravity of any argument that white men had a right to confront him with guns and end his life simply because he was a black man who stood his ground in their neighborhood, because he didn’t explain and supplicate himself to them.

But nobody belonged to this particular place more than Ahmaud Arbery.

And this

And while the immediate fault for those actions lies with the people who took them, we as a community and as individual electors idly allowed our leadership to believe that we would accept or expect them to allow this racial killing to go unpunished. That fault lies with us. Worse, the McMichaels’ intimate knowledge of how their crime likely would be treated by local law enforcement most certainly emboldened them to grab their guns that day and pursue Ahmaud. If the McMichaels had believed the police would arrest or kill them for their armed pursuit of Ahmaud, then they never would have left their homes in the first place. Accordingly, if we as a community had not been willfully blind to our institutionalized racism, Ahmaud might still be alive.

snip

nd lest you begin telling yourself that the age of these prophetic books demonstrates that we’ve moved beyond the problem, then skip ahead to Chapter 15, entitled “White Aggression,” where Dollard writes in anachronistic prose a statement that nevertheless directly informs our understanding of the 21st Century lynching of Ahmaud Arbery:

The only protection the Negro has is the conscience of the individual white man, and, as we know, this barrier cannot be relied upon throughout the whole population. Some white people possess the necessary restraints, others do not. The asocial, sadistic, or psychopathic white person is a real danger, for few of the culture-old restraints on individual aggression apply to his acts against the Negro.

And finally:

We cannot bow our heads and call it “tragic” and leave it to the authorities and the politicians who will never protect our neighbors or us unless we require it of them. Rather, we must own responsibility for Ahmaud’s murder and its cover-up as both an individual and collective sin that stains us all. Then, we must humble ourselves by accepting forgiveness and vowing henceforth to do everything in our power to ensure that it never happens again.

I commend twocoach for talking about the Confederate flag in his hometown and his reluctance and that of anyone to make a scene about it. And I resent DC's attempts to normalize those racist assholes who fly the Confederate flag. But, I have to admit that I dropped out of a committee trying to get the Confederate flag removed from my county, for personal reasons not related to politics. Told myself that I was one of the first to go before the County Commissioners and stand up for removing it--and to be on the video feed doing so.

I've dealt with Confederate flag protesters getting in the face of and trying to force a confrontation with a seated elderly black woman at a Juneteenth celebration that featured the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. Have had to get a Sheriff's Deputy standing guard at a later hearing about the Confederate flag to stop a lady Bubba following me around a parking lot and harassing me as I was trying to get to my car, only because I'd taken a photo of trucks with Confederate flags flying from them. And then I did no more, and said to myself I was grieving and dealing with selling houses and had done my part.

The Confederate flag still flies at the courthouse in my county and having read lots of Civil War books in the past few years, I know just how horrific the evil that it represents was. I will have to go back to working on that, as we all need to let the authorities and politicians know that the old culture that tolerated those flags is gone. And we need to let those parading around with them to know that as well.
