IL is one of the 2 states that's considered to be in the "not reopening" yet phase...and yet golf courses were opened a few weeks ago...retail stores are open for curbside purchases so the small local boutiques run Facebook lives to show off their merchandise where people can easily see it and pick stuff out (not perfect, but it is still open)....the only things I can think of that aren't open in some capacity are barbershops/salons, restaurants dining rooms, and schools....and honeslty, none of those 3 should be open yet. Even our hospitals have resumed some of their stuff for non emergency procedures.

HD can respond for himself, of course, but I don’t think the schools opening comment is purely about his job.

If kids being home is going to be a semi-permanent thing, you’ll see lots of two-income households go down to one. That will have broad-scale economic effects (especially on discretionary spending like restaurants, retail, entertainment, etc.).

Oh absolutely. But the positive effects of that would likely take years to manifest. And it is certainly the case that the hardest hit would be the families already struggling to get by with two modest incomes.

Schools not opening would be, I think, a capital P Problem.

The first coronavirus vaccine to be tested in people appears to be safe and able to stimulate an immune response against the virus, its manufacturer, Moderna announced on Monday.

The findings are based on results from the first eight people who each received two doses of the vaccine, starting in March.

Those people, healthy volunteers, made antibodies that were then tested in human cells in the lab, and were able to stop the virus from replicating — the key requirement for an effective vaccine. The levels of those so-called neutralizing antibodies matched the levels found in patients who had recovered after contracting the virus in the community.

The company has said that it is proceeding on an accelerated timetable, with the second phase involving 600 people to begin soon, and a third phase to begin in July involving thousands of healthy people. The Food and Drug Administration gave Moderna the go-ahead for the second phase earlier this month.

If those trials go well, a vaccine could become available for widespread use by the end of this year or early 2021, Dr. Tal Zaks, Moderna’s chief medical officer, said in an interview. How many doses might be ready is not clear, but Dr. Zaks said, “We’re doing our best to make it as many millions as possible.”

You're right. And that's one of the primary reasons we need to be smart about re-opening. We can't afford a massive spike because people want festivals and monster truck rallies or other large gatherings. I think some level of sacrifices still need to be made...albeit less than what it was in April.

That's a good way to sum up my general thoughts on the matter: to the extent each person, each family, each neighborhood, each company, can minimize person to person contact without materially impacting their life and livelihood, they should.
