Even if every suspect says “I can’t breathe,” I’m not sure that means cops are no longer supposed to treat it as a medical emergency.

They even called an ambulance. But on the scene, their mindset wasn’t exactly first aid.

The first two are different from the last, given the assailants. And it would be a mistake to conflate the two, because they point to different solutions.

Racism is bad. In fact, it's evil. But a general propensity to distrust those outside of one's own in-group is a characteristic of the human condition from time immemorial. We should work to address that and to eliminate as much of it as possible, but we must also acknowledge that a world entirely free from such negative prejudices is every bit as unlikely as a world without violence or war.

The idea that George Floyd and Eric Garner were directly killed by racism is highly unlikely. And pursuing that as the principal cause of their deaths would be a disservice to their memories and to those who might suffer a similar fate in the future, without intervention. Indirectly, they were victims of race because of the circumstances of their lives that are derived from racial matters. But directly, they were victims of poor/bad/malicious policing. And THAT can be addressed a great deal more easily than the entire human condition.

I am curious if police officers, who are considered first responders, have a legal obligation to provide medical aid when they encounter someone who requires medical assistance.
