In the context of this thread, I was thinking that recruitment of new officers was a key to changing policing. And what it must have taken to become black female detectives of my generation in the Deep South, to be able to order around white men that you're arresting or to advance your career because you close cases by getting confessions by putting the Mama Eye on perps.

Thinking that a young woman who, in the midst of a riot and pandemic, was uppity enough to dress down a car load of white people and order them to move on might be uppity enough, like my friends, to be the kind of person police departments should be looking to hire. Remembering the words of a well-respected warden who said he always hired a bunch of women officers because "There's less testosterone flying around and they can say to a prisoner that the other guards are ready to beat on, Put your hands out in front of you and let me cuff you, and he will."

And, reflecting on ass-backwards, Minneapolis police have been known as a racist, sadistic group since Hubert Humphrey was mayor and last I looked at a map, that wasn't anywhere in the South. But, I did see the lady Police Chief in Atlanta out talking with demonstrators. Lawsie, that must be ass backward in your view.

ETA: Oh, and I do apologize for the personal story. I am after all, an ass backward Southern woman.

Nope. As stated, as individuals mostly terrific people. As an institution not so much.

And pointing to Minneapolis as equally troubled (or worse) does nothing g to change the individual merits or deficiencies aforementioned.

But, you seem to like the other kids do it too argument.

"Bless your heart" is a Southern woman's insult, along with other phrases like "Thank you for sharing" and "Isn't that nice?" So, it's gender-based from the start. Probably a passive-aggressive tradition handed down from our great, great grandmothers who were the rare American women that had to deal with begging soldiers of 2 occupying armies to spare enough bacon, cornmeal and a few chickens to keep their children from starving.

But lawsie, a Kansan is talking about the rest of the world viewing some folks as ass backward? I can't tell you how many times I get asked "What IS the matter with..."

As for Minneapolis, "others do it too," I don't really know, but perhaps the greater segregation of communities in the North than the South these days makes it even more difficult to overcome the attitudes and actions of cops. But, it wasn't really an "others do it too" comment, because if Minneapolis had made as many changes in police departments as metropolitan Southern departments have in the last 75 years since Humphrey was a mayor, I don't know that we'd be seeing riots there on our TVs.
