So, is this because they are Catholic or because they are rich, entitled, a-holes? My experience points to the latter much more strongly than the former.Grandma wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 9:49 am I read things like this too often - https://www.jpost.com/American-Politics ... erg-625295
Reminds me of the two kids who played basketball for my former High School and were playing against the "Jesuit" private school rival. Unfortunately I have reached my monthly story limit so I can't read the article but here is the link telling about it - https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct- ... story.html.
Regardless of what the article says or doesn't say, if I recall the story (as it was told to me) correctly, it was basically that they were being harassed during the game because they had what were perceived as Jewish last names. One of the kids was on the free throw line and a group of students started chanting - "You killed Jesus". The kid stepped off the free throw line, shook his head at the students, and said, "I'm not Jewish".
I guess I should also mention this is the same school that back in the early/mid 80s had a couple kids playing hockey who thought it was funny to draw swastikas on the blades of their hockey sticks when they played against schools/teams that had Jews playing for them. Nice that the parents and coach/es didn't feel a need to tell them not to do it - and let them use the sticks when playing.
This is a "premier/elite" private school in an affluent suburb of Chicago that I am talking about. I mention that because it's a perfect example of racism and anti-semitism knowing no educational, monetary, and geographical boundaries.
* Forgot to mention when I was a Senior I went to a party that was mostly Loyola (at that time boys only) and Regina ("sister" school to Loyola) kids. There was a girl there that I knew who went to Regina and was wasted. I asked her if she wanted/needed a ride home. I had zero motive other than to be a decent guy. She accepted my offer - and she puked in my car. I dropped her off, made sure she got in her house ok, and left. Thought that was the end if it. It wasn't. Apparently some Loyola guys felt the need to start the rumor that I tried to "rape" her. Multiple phone calls to my house with death threats followed. I admit I watched my back - closely - for about a month after that.

chikn - Don't get me wrong, plenty of assholes all over. New Trier definitely included. Of course Jew assholes too. My guess is some/many on here could/would tell me to look in the mirror. I have. Trust me, sometimes I see an asshole.
HD - I don't think it's "because" of either. I think it's because some people just have hate in their blood (and brains) for those who are not like them.
Like I said, regardless of education, money, location. Etc.

Re: New Trier area,
In general they're more creepy than assholey. Not exactly sure how to explain it. We did get some anti-Semitic thing in our mailbox shortly after moving in. But in general, the people that grew up here and still live here tend to be very polite, but, I don't know, just creepy.

True. People hate and they don't really need a valid reason to do so.Grandma wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 10:57 am chikn - Don't get me wrong, plenty of assholes all over. New Trier definitely included. Actually, no.DCHawk1 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 24, 2020 1:15 pm It's just that "prosperity theology" is, via Calvin, one of the foundations for capitalism, the theological/philosophical idea that enabled a belief in the efficacy of the accumulation of earthly capital.
What I make of that meme is that it was created by someone equally dedicated to principles of faith as even the most ardent religious zealot.
You must not have been to many prosperity gospel events.

Re: More evidence that religious threads make you dum
You are very perceptive. "Creepy" is a good descriptive word. I assume you have heard of Stepford wives. I have used the analogy that many families in the New trier district come off as Stepford families. That's a bad analogy but as you said, I'm not exactly sure how to explain it.Mjl wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 11:56 amRe: New Trier area,

If you ever watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I think they hit the nail on the head with Cameron and his relationship with his parents in terms of how SOME New Trier families come off to me.
Re: More evidence that religious threads make you dum
Yeah, we don't really associate with most of them. Our neighbor friends are all people that moved here from somewhere else. The vast majority of neighbors, at least one adult grew up in New Trier. They don't seem to like us.

This shouldn't make you dumb (thread title reference) and perhaps it belongs on the Dumbfuck thread but it's my post and I'm posting it here.
Interesting read. At least I thought so.
I don't agree with most of what the Archbishop wrote but he's entitled to his opinion/s and I'm open to educating myself on how others think - and why.

If Jesus came back today, Trump wouldn't let him in the country.
Re: More evidence that religious threads make you dum
Jesus would be tear gassed, maced, beaten with batons and then arrested and labeled Antifa.

Shaun King is an interesting person. Lots of questions about who his real father is. I agree with many things he says/stands for, but he gets quite a bit of pushback on social media from some black people.
But he is right....if Jesus was a real person, he wasn't pasty white.

Certainly not pasty white, probably not necessary to tear down his statues either. Not every statue needs to come down. Teddy Roosevelt did wonderful things for this country. Let his statue stand.
God hope they dont judge me in 100 years based on whatever the new advances might be.

Ya I dont see the point in tearing down Jesus statues. I think he's just saying that for shock value/hot take value.TDub wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 8:55 pm Certainly not pasty white, probably not necessary to tear down his statues either.
