"Sacred" or not.....
I'm an asshole who went to HS in the 80s. We had two public High Schools that people in our town (and neighboring towns) went to. You either went to New Trier West or New Trier East. West were the Cowboys and East were the Indians. Made for a great rivalry. At the time, I don't believe there were too many people offended by Indians (or Cowboys) being the team names and both schools had mascots.
Anyways, due to declining enrollment, the two schools combined. East had been in existence for close to 100 years. West, I believe only 16 years.
The powers that be decided it was best to change the school mascot/s to a single mascot with a new name.
Needless to say, the people who grew up going to East were pissed off that their tradition would end - especially being that East would become the school for ALL Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors and West would be Freshmen only. Many generations of New Trier East Indians took a lot of pride in their school and having been an Indian. Shit, the name of the town of Winnetka (where New Trier East was/is located) is a Native American name/word.
As a Freshman (Cowboy) I got to vote on the new name and school colors. For some unknown bullshit reason the two finalists came down to either Trail Blazers or Trevians (which was a soldier from the city of Trier Germany during the Roman Empire) and the color choices were either maroon and silver or green and blue (East was green and West was blue so it was a combo).
Trevians and green and blue were the winners.
Point of all that is, I am someone who feels the name should have never been changed and would have preferred and been proud to have been an Indian. I respect those who had many generations of New Trier Indians in their blood and respect that they felt it was "sacred" to them. Meanwhile, 40 years later, my guess is there are tens of thousands of people who attended New Trier who don't give a fuck that they were Trevians and not Indians - or Cowboys. Why would they?

Indeed it is. Not so funny thing is there were some people who objected to the name being they felt it glorified "war". Meanwhile, they probably had no issue with Cowboys vs. Indians.
Here is a not so interesting side note. The school "logo" was designed by a white girl with the last name Coon.

Let’s get rid of kickoffs as as been suggested for several straight years now, and switch to CFL rule, and Voila, most of this issue is solved.

No, it won't. I'd love to see the chant stop as well as the home of the chiefs thing during the NA. Both should be discouraged. Playing it over the PA only encourages the messourahins.

Again, this feels like a homerish response, but I just don't see the problem. I don't think there's anything denigrating about "Chiefs" or the chop.

I suppose the other angle would be that, were your people kicked off their land and systematically oppressed for generations by white people, maybe you don't want (mostly) white people appropriating your cultural iconography and making up fake rituals.

My guess by the backlash to his BLM stance is it wouldn't stop even with a Mahomes please. If Self can't get "Home of the Chiefs" to stop, pDubs isn't going to stop his childish "AhhhhAAahhhhAAhhhHH" while sticking his thumb in the nose of the person behind him.

I will have to admit that I'm struggling with what is wrong with the tomahawk chop. Call me a homer as well but I have always thought it was cool - whether it be at Seminole or Chiefs game.
I would have to assume that those who are for removing it would say the chop is synonymous with the 'noble savage' stereotype but in all realities Native peoples from the Eastern Woodlands to the Plains tribes used tomahawks for peace, war and every day use.
Removing Redskins, the war paint, and bonnets I am all for.

You change the Chiefs name and ban head-dresses/war paint etc ( I personally would never wear something like that to a game ) then you should change the Vikings name and ban the horned helmets.

Here's how I understand the argument: The chant, like the headdress, is part of a caricature of an entire people. Any part of that--especially when race-related--it's tough to be on the other side of that.
