Name is officially done. New name not released yet due to pending trademarks.

Would seem to suggest Warriors is the desired play.

I saw a suggestion that, when this bill comes due for "Chiefs," that, among other things, "Pioneers" and "Cavalry" should be considered.

Those are...um...hilariously and specifically not the idea here.

Chiefs should change to Kings if forced to change.

Or, just be the first team to drop the dopey ‘mascots’ and go with Kansas City.

Chiefs will follow the Braves's lead, which seems sensible. Keep the innocuous nickname, but get rid of the caricature encouraging.

Warriors is kinda lame, cuz there’s already a pro team by the same name. Sure there’s already other pro teams that share names, and lord knows too many tigers and eagles and wildcats at the college level, but you get to pick a whole new name. Pick something new.

I kinda like cascadia’s suggestion, even though the wizards kinda did it already.

But I also like the mascots being the “Mascots.” Kinda undermines the whole thing.

We shouldn’t be telling KC fans how to root for their beloved.

I tend to agree.

I also think one of the Washington possibilities - Redtails - just puts them on the same level as Chiefs and Braves and Seminoles and Blackhawks.

I thought Redtails was a nod to a US military outfit?

A little perspective I saw on twitter this morning: I guess the Chiefs used to have a mascot that was someone dressed in full "Native American" garb with headdress, paint, etc. That was replaced with KC Wolf, who is now beloved amongst Chiefs fans. At the time, there was backlash for the replacement--same kind of "PC" arguments. Vast majority of the fans just want football.

Some dude filed a ton of trademarks to squat on potential name changes in like 2014. Word is they are negotiating with him on the rights, or at the very least, consulting with the Washington Football Club's lawyers to make sure no infringement.

It was an all-black fighter group from WW2. They made a movie about it. I could see there being trademark issues with the name.

Right - the name would be a nod to a group that was its own group only because of segregation. It seems to me that that's not so far removed from the issue here.

If they want to honor Native Peoples and the military they should be the Washington Code Talkers.

That’s the problem with using sports as any type of platform for outrage. We go to sports to avoid such things, generally speaking. So, sure, use the spotlight to get your issues noticed, but don’t linger, or the escapism is compromised.

Problem this time is a lot of this is echoed in the employee/ownership/leadership hierarchy of the leagues. Will be curious if real inroads are made.

It's so sad how we let a small minority of people decide that racism is in everything. If they must find a new name, Washington Warriors is probably the best way to go.
