Read that about 7 years ago. Some good points made. Hans is a ruthless businessman. Anyone who knows him well will tell you this. He will not take no for an answer, and I don't mean that in any bad way. But... like Wal Mart, he outsources most of his music to ghost writers, and they are forced to write within a very narrow set of boundaries (that are not in any way comparable to Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams). That is why he is not respected as a serious composer in LA.

Regardless of method ( i.e a creative director at an ad agency may be very hands on a project or just guide his art directors and copy writers ) he is in charge of producing good ( and continually award nominated ) music.

Dunkirk is a helluva score.

I'm just being real with you -- most composers despise his music. Why? It's watered down for the masses. He also has anywhere form 30 to 50 ghostwriters depending on the picture. A lot of film directors now are asking composers to "not sound like Hans" because that sound is so tiring and dumbed down. Hans is however, the most successful businessman in the composing world -- without a doubt.

There is nothing "wrong" with listening to Hans. However, I encourage you and others to consider composers like Ennio Morricone, who recently passed. That guy was a real composer.

I listen to probably any movie composer that you would name - including Morricone, who's Untouchables score is tops.

I still would easily name Hans Zimmer in my top 10 movie composers.
Likely top 5.

Shore. Goldsmith. Zimmer. Williams. Newman. Elfman. Silvestri.
Reznor's Social Network is up there but he doesn't have the portfolio of the other guys.
Daft Punk's Tron legacy. Disasterpeace's It Follows.
Also give me video game composer Jeremy Soule or Matt Eulman.

Horner.
He's another good one.
Probably not in my top 10 but he did Apollo 13 and Enemy at the Gates.

James Horner was an interesting composer. Some have criticized him a lot, but I actually like his music a lot. Maybe not in the league of Jerry Goldsmith, but nothing like Hans. Sadly, he died a few years ago in a small plane crash.

John Barry. He was considered one of the best film composers of all time.

He did create the Bond music, no?
So, I mean, that alone gets him some major points.

Also, that part of the Mohicans ( River Walk ) immediately made me think of Gettysburg, which is a bit hokey but also has some pretty powerful moments - and sure enough Last of the Mohicans was composed by both Jones and Randy Edelman - Edelman did the score for Gettysburg.
