COVID-19 numbers
Re: COVID-19 numbers
Ah, I forgot about Isaias. Florida did mention they were suspending testing in the path, so that makes a lot of sense why Florida's numbers have dropped off this week. Plus people picking up from the storm probably are less worried about testing than making sure their windows are all repaired.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
To this point, on average 50,000 people die annually in the US from pneumonia.
From February 1 to August 1 2020, there were 90,000 non-covid pneumonia deaths:
https://www.statista.com/statistics/111 ... nd-flu-us/ (subtract COVID + pneumonia from pneumonia deaths).
The death count from COVID seems to probably be very low.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
I bet Florida accounts for a good portion of that. Around May, they were outpacing their YTD Pneumonia deaths by 7x. It was something like they would expect 5,000 deaths at that point, and it was at like 35k.Mjl wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 10:15 am To this point, on average 50,000 people die annually in the US from pneumonia.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
Right - we're going to have to back into all of these numbers, unfortunately.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
I should've looked up the news that I was referring to. It was in May, but it was 5x the numbers, and looks to be in more states than Florida. Maybe the numbers I remembered was a total of all the states.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
Best case scenario is that states simply were not testing for COVID in the early days and chalked it up to a likely cause.NiceDC wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 10:21 am I should've looked up the news that I was referring to. Worst case is a coordinated effort to keep COVID numbers as low as possible.
Either way, the real death toll of this will never be known and is most likely much, much higher than the large number it already is.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
I am sure it is just a coincidence that Trump announced that Florida and Texas will be the only states that will have 100% of the costs of the national guard deployed to help with COVID covered by the federal government while all other states will have to foot 25% of the cost.twocoach wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 2:07 pmBest case scenario is that states simply were not testing for COVID in the early days and chalked it up to a likely cause.NiceDC wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 10:21 am I should've looked up the news that I was referring to. Re: COVID-19 numbers
Big headline on CNN about Sturgis being a super spreader event. It probably is, for sure. But they also said how protests didnt spread a single case. Its such slanted ass bullshit reporting. I hate the state of our current media (among other things). Actually i pretty much just hate everyone and everything.

Where's the non-peer reviewed article on every news outlet about bikers make non-bikers stay home so it's okay?
Let's face it. Everyone is spinning it to apporve of the activities they do or support. Illy says golfing is ok, mich NEEDS to boat, protesters gonna protest, bikers gonna rally.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
I wonder how many of those in Sturgis currently “believe” in Evolution? Protesters, bikers, Herman Cain.....doesn’t matter. Personal practice will determine what happens. Just that in the bikers’ case, as with spring-breakers (unlike protesters) the area where they carry back the virus to is enormous.
Although Tom Clancy turned into Jon Voight in his later years his description of “Ebola-terrorism” is a good lesson. Conventions are great for spreading disease.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
But to Tdubs point. Protests have many of the same features. Including out of city and out of state travel. Remember that early on we kept hearing that all the violent protestors were from out of state.
Every time we leave the house we're taking some level of risk. We should each hold ourselves to stricter rules while being understanding and forgiving of others.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
From a purely pandemic-related concern, yeah, they have a lot of the same features that could contribute to the spread of the virus.
But perhaps it’s worth mentioning one event is in protest against centuries of brutal systemic oppression, and the other one is a leisure vacation to enjoy motorcycles and fake tits.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
Yes. Then say that. Say you think the cause is worth the risk and other thing isn't. Don't pretend that the one you supports doesn't spread the virus and the other does.

Hell yes I think motorcycles and fake tits is worth the risk!
Re: COVID-19 numbers
Sturgis is the place to be. My family is based in South Dakota. Some of the most lax strip joint laws in America. Females from Las Vegas and L.A. fly to Sturgis to work the clubs this weekend. So COVID-19 will play no role in the activities.
I know someone that goes to Sturgis with her husband every year. Not this year.
It will be interesting to see what will happen.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
But re: worth the risk, I suppose I differentiated not as a matter of judging which was “worth the risk,” so much as pointing out that one comes more from some sense of existential desperation, and the other is just a big party.
With one, I’m not gonna tell them taking that risk is not necessary. With the other, by its very nature, it isn’t.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
Each individual can gauge their risk vs reward and decide accordingly.
Problem with that is that it also impacts the rest of us that follow the rules and guidelines. I dont give a damn if its protests or parties its still spreading the virus and potentially impacting all of us.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
Somehow I doubt that there were protesters who carried the virus from New Jersey to South Dakota, infecting people in every little town where they ate or slept and then gave it someone who in turn carried it to everyone between South Dakota and Texas.
FTR, I didn’t participate in any protest (although I so wanted to, and may have, under non-pandemic conditions) or go to motorcycle rallies. In fact our bicycle group hasn’t had group rides since February

Re: COVID-19 numbers
so the protesters that came to minnesota from out of state did so in a perfectly sanitized bubble and couldnt possibly have contacted anyone or spread the virus?

Re: COVID-19 numbers
I should have qualified the scale. Just about everyone at Sturgis is not from there. I doubt that the majority of protesters in Minnesota were from out of State. I would also venture a guess (only a guess) that a larger proportion of protesters wore a mask than bikers.
