Hard to say whether that will come from within or without the GOP.

One thing that's stunning to consider is that something like 1/3 of America believes the messages that went across last night.
I think a good portion of those people are really just lemmings. Not sure they actually believe the message or if they just follow and support the current “R”

Nikki Haley going to be the 2024 front-runner, probably right? Her speech basically seemed to set the tone that she is going for 2024. While I don't think she's that far from Trump, she's not that far right. I think she'd embrace the new wacky norm of the Republican Party, but she's also smart enough to realize that Trump is a hack and she is not a fan of everything he does.

Issue is those people are dying and dying fast. Biden is outperforming college students 82-18. This country isn’t getting any whiter. Issues such as lgbt and voting equality are getting more popular. With gig economy and stagnant mobility, GOP just cannot survive on grievance politics much longer.

From experience (family and friends) people only hear the following key phrases. Pro-life, NRA, Limited govt and lower taxes. If someone says that, they are voting for them. Doesn't matter who says it.

But that being said, the people that actually believe every word of the messages that went across last night is probably about 1/4 of America. There are some people who believe word for word, and then the remaining of the R population believes in those key phrases that I listed above and will put up with the rest.

(Precisely why it's trying to entrench now, right?)

I don't know how you entrench with a shrinking 1/3 of the country tho. Especially when currently only 25% self-identify as Republicans. I guess disenfranchise, but I don't know if that's a true long-term goal.

Nobody thought it would work last election either, yet here we are.

I think they’re just trying to double down?

Tons of people thought Trump would win. Those who didn't include pundits and the GOP party (not voters). But again, if you use 2018, and early indications in 2020, it seems to be rejected. Coupled with my previous points that GOP ideals are getting less popular, the country is getting less white, younger people are going for DEMs up to 50 points, and older entrenched GOP people are dying, it's not a long term plan, but a unexpected stopgap.

Entrenching the party seems like the worst idea.

I think you’re right.

But we can only hope.

Cuz the best way to create a GOP with actual ideals, is to vote the boogeymanning into oblivion - which is to say, make the boogeymanning not work any more for the gop.

That's probably a better word for it.

Stack the courts. Suppress voting rights. Break the inspector general regime.

And so on and so forth.

Would a regular Conservative appeal to what has become the base of the GOP any more? It just seems like many conservatives are being driven out of the Republican Party.

If you get rid of the #SaveOurChildren, #SaveOurChurch, #SaveOurGuns and #SaveOurRace folks, the GOP would not win another election for generations.

Most of the folks are neither far right or far left. Most of the folks have been left behind to just shake our heads. Most of the folks feel left out in the cold by the two major parties.

Most of the folks just cannot relate.

The difference between 2016 and now is that people have actually seen what has happend with Trump as President. In 2016 there was a lot of hype, smoke, and mirrors. Today we have reality/results of that decision.

No way Donald Jr would be it. He can't. He would get eaten alive. He's nowhere near the talker his father is and he would not be able to survive any attacks thrown on him.

I honestly think Trump was a one-off because people hated HRC that much. If the Dems put out Biden 4 years ago, I think Biden is the current Prez.

I am watching the RNC on Univision. You have to know what to look for to find their coverage. It shows up in the TV on-line guide as, "El Gordo y El Vacio". Then you can turn off the sound and read the subtitles, or make up your own.
