What are you talking about? We have a progressive income tax and have since the civil war. Only a few candidates have proposed a flat tax rate, and none gained much traction.

We all depend on well-run government to survive. Every time someone wants to add a program for the needy, like say health care, it is bad socialism. Every time we starve the government of operating funds so the wealthy can can spike the ball, it is free market capitalism. Get a certain amount of tattered poor to support the country club exclusions and tax abatements? Democracy. Tattered poor taking control of government and unionizing? Election fraud.
