I was talking to a Contractor on a project in Jackson MS one time about shop drawings submittals. I told him we would get them to him on Monday. Then corrected myself, because Monday was Memorial Day and their office wasn't going to be open. He corrected me, "we don't celebrate Memorial Day down here." I thought he was joking and asked him why? His reply, "Because we didn't win the Civil War. That is for Union States."

I had no idea what to say to that.

US’s facade on racial and religious liberty is one that would make Potemkin proud. You can have all the equality you want as long you’re white and male; you can have all the religious liberty as long as you’re a practicing Christian, preferably Evangelical; Catholics would be reluctantly accepted.
