Less federally contolled policy and more locally controlled policy
which policies, or kinds of policies though?

we’re seeing the ramifications of state and even more localized control of election procedures. do you think this has gone smoothly?

i’m honestly curious what specific things you think should be controlled/regulated more locally

I think the federal government should have significantly less control than it does. It should control and coordinate military activity, international relations/facilitate trade relations and coordinate globally on issues such as climate change and international threats and be involved in interstate crime and interstate issues.

so, you don’t think we should have an EPA? how about Department of the Interior?

do you think we should have labor standards that apply equally no matter which state you live in?

do you think Eisenhower was a fool for establishing the interstate highway system?

I think the examples you gave are fairly obvious ones that the feds should take the lead on. i’m curious about your allusion to “interstate issues” and what those entail. can you give me an example?

i’m sitting here trying to come up with examples where i think there is federal overreach, and all i can think of is the opposite - issues, like education, where states have screwed the pooch when left to their own devices

i’m sure there are instances where states deserve more say, but i honestly can’t come up with any

In a perfect world, for a lot of situations, it should be a hybrid.

So, for example, I think there should be a federal minimum wage, and it should be set at whatever is appropriate for the poorest state, so Mississippi, and then the other 49 should all set a higher minimum wage based off that and what's appropriate for their state. And then local governments can do similar, so the state of NY has a minimum wage that's fine for Albany, but in Manhattan they can increase it to the appropriate level for that location.

This is not too far off from how this plays out in practice, I think there are 30 some states with their own minimum wage that is higher than the federal one.

I think we could do the same thing for things like emission standards. This is what CA tried to do, raise their state emissions standards higher than the federal level and then Trump tried to fight it.

This is one of many reasons I don't consider Trump a republican. To me, CA setting increased emissions standards is how the system should work when viewed through a Republican perspective. And in the aforementioned WY, they can stick with the federal standard because emmissions aren't as big of a problem there as in CA.

and this is largely the way it works now, as a hybrid system

right or wrong tho, your example of emissions throws a wrench into the system because then cali dictates what the auto manufacturers do, since 1) they aren’t going to produce two sets of cars, and 2) they aren’t going to not sell to cali

But it has a large impact or why did you spend the last 4 years fretting?
At this point you're just kind of blindly throwing poop at the wall so I am going to go back outside and work on my Christmas lights. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
My point being that if we are going to ignore less populated areas in the general election then we need to give local powers more responsibility and control.
See how it feels when someone wants your vote to count a little bit less? "Ignored". Kinda like "ignoring" the masses accumulated in cities.

What is it specifically that you don't feel rural areas have the ability to do for themselves? Local cities and states have plenty of power to do what needs to be done at that level. They just need to elect better representatives to do it and then demand that it be done. And then people need to better recognize what is truly a local issue vs a state issue vs a federal issue.

Probably not. But it's what's needed.

Progressives are the engine that drives progress, and conservatives steer the ship.

Trump broke that and the country is worse because of it.
