Aikman played in that '84 game. He was a freshman.

Watching Kerwin Bell's freshman and sophomore seasons in 1980-81 was pretty special.

After that, KU's most prolific player was punter Bucky Scribner.

I'm sure we all remember when one of my favorite KU players of all time, Nick Reid, went from a skinny dual threat quarterback to 45ish lbs heavier and a devastating linebacker via every steroid known to man.

Funny story about Nick Reid. I grew up in Newton, which is fairly obvious by my name. Newton High played at Derby High around 2001 maybe? I was a younger guy and unable to go anywhere solo, so I went with my dad, as he knew a couple of Derby people from his work and so we were visiting with them on the Derby side of the stands. Well, we decide to walk over to the Newton side as we knew far more people and we were rooting for Newton obviously. As we were walking to the sideline, we walked past the part where the Derby football team enters the stadium from the lockerrooms (which was located at the school behind the stadium) Reid was leading the team out to the field, in a full sprint, and it turns out, he wasn't paying attention until the very last second and narrowly dodged a skinny kid who himself, was not paying attention. That would have been a very dangerous proposition for the youngster who wasn't paying attention.

He was skinny but he was still powerful and still 6ft 4 and he could run. I would have gotten absolutely plowed and it would have been pretty nasty.

But man, he turned into an absolute beast at KU.

Remember when we were all bitching to play Marcus Herford at QB because he was the next Vince Young?

Marcus Herford ended up being a 3rd string split end who made a critical catch in the MU game in the snow at Arrowhead. Another example of Mangino putting his best players on the field no matter the position. Freshman year, Herford was KU's best QB.

Aikman was the back up, but was moving toward being the starter. I think he had like 80 yards passing in the game.

Not to rain on the Nick Reid parade but wasn't that him that got shook in the open field by VY in the infamous 'BCS' game. Of course no shame in getting beat by VY in the open field. Another game I stood front row in the student section. It was mostly empty when the game started but by the end it was full.

Herf. Great return specialist. I don't remember the talk around him being QB? Speaking of specialists remember when Raimond Pendelton returned a punt for a TD, got a 15 yard unsportsmanlike and Mangino ripped his ass, lol.

I know desperate times make us do strange things but I want no parts of Barmann. He was awful back then and he would be awful now. Now Brian Luke. Maybe.

Yeah was on the east sideline at about the 50 for the BCS game. Nobody was there like you mentioned and by the end, it was full and loud. But man, 4th and 18. Reid and VY 1 on 1 and Young ran right by him with little trouble. Just how good VY was.

Hereford was a QB when he came to KU. Turned out he couldn't throw well enough to play so he became really good at returning kicks and was a marginal offensive player. But man could he run. You could tell he was good at running. Perfect form, really good speed and had some good acceleration.

Speaking of QBs who I thought could be really good. Mario Kinsey. Which every time I think of Mario Kinsey, I think of the incredible football and basketball uniforms he wore. The royal blue helmets with the red facemasks were awesome. And just the simple blue jersey and straight white pant for home games and white jersey and blue pants for the away games are classic. And basketball he wore the shorts with the arch on them and the somewhat circus style font.

But arguably the most clutch performer of the early Mangino era was Mark Simmons. He made all the big catches, some with both hands and some with one hand, and he had the speed to outrun guys too. I believe Romary used to call him the "Touchdown Maker" on the Lawrence broadcasts after the actual game aired on ESPN, Fox Sports or whatnot.

Mark Simmons. The LoneStar something is what I thought Romary use to call him. Remember him and Aqib getting into an altercation with some gentleman outside of the Saki house on Mass St.

Looked it up: Barmann 27-54, 405 yds, 2 TD's, 3 INT's in Lincoln.

I don't think we have a QB on this year's roster that could do that.

I also recall that UNL fumbled the ball out of the end zone in OT. Should have been our ball to win.

KU made it to a bowl game in 2005 as well. They should have in 2006 had Mangino swallowed his pride by starting Reesing for the Mizzou game finale.

Bruce Adams. Loved that guy. The towel, Mustache and toughness. If he would have gotten some run, he might have been a Largent at the next level. Jaynes would throw to him over the middle and he would hold on no matter how hard he was plastered. 73 was a fun year, had the K.U.F.F. horseshoe section tickets. Laverne Smith is another of the post Riggo great ones. I did get to watch the Aikman loss too, but I left at half-time to play chess.
