Again, not a good comparison.

It’s Cal’s 11th season in Lexington. So a better analogy would be if Self had a bad start to the 14-15 season.

I suppose we DID have a bad noncon that season. We got handed the worst loss of Self’s tenure here by - wait for it - Cal and UK, go figure. That team sucked.

But still, that start wasn’t as bad as 1 conference win and a 5 game loosing streak.

The comparison is between KU fans and UK fans. UK is 1-5 right now and melting down. KU fans, in Self's first two months, were questioning the hire. That was some epic melting down for no reason.

Also consider: Bradley, Bucknell, N.D. State, and Northern Iowa.

But again, I think comparing a coach and a fanbase in the first few seasons is a lot different than comparing a coach and fanbase over a decade in.

Self has earned more confidence among the fans over the course of his tenure.

Over the same time frame, Cal is loosing confidence.

exactly. Self's first 2 seasons he still had a good group of guys. He didn't have to rebuild right off the bat like a lot of new hires do. He had simien langford miles and lee as upperclassman. And hell he even had a couple mcdonalds all americans commited as incoming freshman when he got here. JR giddens and Dave Padgett lol

Year 3 was when he had to rebuild his culture

CnB can suck it. Cal sucks. He’s a sleaze. He’s a coach that relies only on recruiting but can’t do Xs and Os for shit.
Well got-damn. ;)

He very much can coach the hell out of Xs and Os, but at the end of the day you're talking about teenagers who have never played with each other (and maybe never played in a real system). There's only so much you can do when you are allergic to continuity.

It's not an indictment of Cal's coaching skills that he can't get them all rowing the same direction; it's an indictment of his roster philosophy.

Yes. It's the deal the coach and fans made with each other.

Cal doesn't think there's any point to trying to install something more complicated than the dribble drive. It works for him when he has Rose, Wall, even Fox, etc. and then it's also going to look like a giant train wreck when he puts out their bad frosh PG in a year like this one.

Yup. Good post.

Cal’s issue isn’t coaching so much as it is he sold his soul to the one and done model.

And that model’s playing with fire - especially since K slithered in about it.

Maybe the recruiting stars align, or maybe they explode in your face.

I’m not going Gutter. I just am old enough to remember the Fire Self threads in December 2003.

Wait until KU passes them in all-time wins...could happen this year. I think we are only 10 games behind, maybe 11. That will be the all time meltdown on Rupp Rafters...lol.

We have what, 18 regular season games left plus some B12 tourney games and NCAA games? ( hypothetically)

We go 14-4 in those. Plus let’s say 3 in B12. And 3 in NCAA. 20 more.

UK has 20 left.
You could see em going 10-10 and loosing an opening SEC game.

Yeah Coach Cal not so good when he doesn't get every recruit.
Go back and look at his recruiting classes. Him and WWWes had Nike on lock down. Go back and look.
But damn if Coach K didn't wake up one day and say WTF. That was 2014 when Duke started we ok with the one and done philosophy
