If all this was was opportunistic profiteering off rubes, that's sad (but not, in a big sense, catastrophic).

The problem, of course, is that if you take for granted that 0.0__% of "true believers" will do crazy shit that hurts people, the probability of crazy shit that hurts people happening goes to a mathematical certainty if the pool is big enough.

You're not a dumb person.
Why would you not comprehend that all one has to do is go to ANY social media outlet to find loonies?
I know I don't have to go "looking" for them.
Heck, plenty of them reside on this site.

Like, loonies that storm a state capitol building carrying guns? Or plot to kidnap a governor?

hey, that only happened in, what, 2 of 50 states so far?

I guess that puts the true believers at 4% and counting...

Understanding that "23-year-old with keys to Wal-Mart social accounts" does not equal "Wal-Mart customer base," I think it is very much true that a growing portion of Trump's support (which was already the minority) is sick of this shit and ready to move on.

But it's also a completely non-serious attempt by Hawley. It is entirely to gain MAGA cred. Which is weird, because it won't count for anything.

https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/p ... tion-vote/
In 2000, after the Supreme Court hijacked Florida's right to count its own vote, several Democratic members of the House showed up in the Senate, begging for one Democratic senator to do what Hawley is preparing to do next week. The group included Congressman John Lewis. Not a single Democratic senator chose to stand with him on a critical issue of voting rights and election integrity. Poor Al Gore, presiding over the Senate for the last time as vice president, had to rule Lewis out of order because no Democrat would back him up. Now, regarding an election that the president* lost by almost eight million votes, a Republican senator is willing to monkey-wrench the process in a way that no Democratic senator was willing to do in an election that pivoted on 537 votes in a single state.

If you want a vivid illustration of the differences between how Democrats and Republicans do politics at this time in history, that's as good as any.
