Steak Fries v. Cottage Fries v. Baked Potato

Post by Leawood »

I have been struggling with this issue for decades.

I have come to the conclusion that steak fries are the best as the most versatile potato for any dish. Steak, chicken fried steak, fried chicken, fried cod, baked cod, and lamb. Turkey, mashed potatoes are a must, which is the exception that proves the rule. Steak fries withstand any condiment, even, shudder, ketchup.

Yes to all 3.

But I would also opt for the steak fries If given the choice.

I like steak fries, Gates does them the best.

Mashed with chicken fried steak is a must.

I disagree. I have studied this extensively. Mashed with CFS can get cold if not eaten promptly. Steak fries, in contrast, retain heat while handling the gravy. Plus, steak fries go well with canned green beans with butter and CFS.

Getting that bite of CFS, mashed potatoes, and gravy at the same time is pretty heavenly, though.

Lately I’ve been boiling a whole potato.

Cook til a fork slides in soft, split it in half, chunk of butter and a bunch of seasoning salt, often all I need.

Otherwise, home fries.

But this is cooking at home fwiw.

Not that they’re bad, I’m just not personally much of a fan.

I don’t really like mixing savory and sweet.

And that runny slimy baby food holiday dish covered in marshmallows or whatever? GTFO

But I loved em growing up.

All fried potatoes are good. Some are better than others.

In the mass-produced field, a fast food joint that goes by Rally's or Checker's are the tip-top gold standard. KFC's potato wedges (RIP) were an under-the-radar gem.

Certainly the most disappointing offering is In'N'Out. When your menu consists of three things (burgers, fries, shakes), it is fucking weird that two are best-in-class, and one is trash (relatively speaking).

Aren’t they like hand-cut or whatever too?

We have a Rally's here, I've only eaten there once. I don't remember their fries. I may have to give them another shot.

An A+ offering at an otherwise B- joint.

Yes. And they just mushy, overly-dense, flavorless. They don't salt them enough (which is fixable), but it's just not even a credible starting place.

Plus, that TEXTURE just doesn't seem real.

I hate those little, skinny french fries. Not sure what you call them, but there's no way to get them from the fryer to the table hot. Not worth eating.

So, back to the topic: Steak fries are sturdy, can handle gravy or any condiment, and are like any soft potato on the inside.

Cottage fries are amazing with chicken fried steak and gravy. Cottage fries are the big screw you potato of all time.

The best baked potato in Jackson County is at Jess and Jim’s.

The shoestring fries? I'm hit and miss on those..

Steak fries are incredible. Go with anything. Only a Mashed fan when you mix with things mentioned above like CFS and that family of meat.
