Silencing people is a slippery slope.
But if they are organizing/encouraging criminal acts, then of course they should be silenced.

How did the world operate before social media?

Nobody is silencing anyone. They are merely removing a platform.

How did the world operate before the printing press, newspapers and books?

As time changes, so do the avenues/channels people take to communicate.

If there is a movement by any significant social platforms to regulate speech to a consensus of what is appropriate, I think it can be a form of suppression that may backfire.

may backfire or not, I think some serious suppression is due for the whole conspiracy culture, and closely related white supremacist culture too.

They’ve been waaay too normalized lately.

And it’s hard to do cuz we’ve all become so conditioned to bullshit, but the president of the fucking you-nited states just instigated a riot to overtake the Capitol, while the senate was in there certifying the results of an election!

Like for real how’s that gonna read in a history book?

I get what pdub is saying - this is certainly going to expand the fissure between the sides.
But expanding that fissure also makes it harder for people near it to jump to the other side.

The Georgia race basically has become Order 66. Except the Empire is the good guys here.

Some of it is going to far. Calling for Cruz and Hawley to be removed from office is too far. People calling the entire group rioters and terrorists is wrong, especially for anyone defending the BLM protests because it was only a few bad apples that were burning and looting. Far more were just standing outside the Capitol, exercising their right to protest, than those who breached the grounds. And of course, people are seeing some racists in the group and are labeling everyone as racist, like liberals tend to do these days.

Get Trump out of there, don't let anons on your platforms - but then extend an olive branch. Don't vilify everyone. It's counter-productive.

Where’s that line drawn between calling an entire group rioters and terrorists, and identifying just a few bad apples?

This isn’t protests in the streets and some bad apple decides to throw a brick through a window and loot the liquor store.

This is people who came to disrupt the democratic process itself, in the Capitol building, while senators certified votes.

So if we aren’t supposed to vilify everyone there, who do you suggest should be exempt then?

Pretty much that.
While there are a good number of protestors there who were disillusioned that the man is out to get them to a certain degree, I think most of them stayed peaceful.

If someone was out there protesting the election but was appalled at the violence towards the Capitol, then I think they are wrong/dumb in their opinion, but aren't wrong in actions.

I do know that completely silencing a group can embolden and validate its them vs everyone else ( big tech ).

I think its great they blocked Trump.
I think it's another thing to block entire groups of people in their established communities.
And I'm not denying that a lot of the stuff in those communities are vile and maybe in some ways dangerous.
are they not already of the opinion that it’s them against the world?

How so?

I think conspiracy culture has reached unprecedented spread into mainstream channels, particularly with the Q bullshit.

But hasn’t white supremacy culture always had obvious elements of boogeymanning? I guess it depends on what counts as “conspiracy.” But these have either way always been fringe nut jobs who will only believe their own narratives.

And, man, do we some day learn more about Q, and who was behind it?

No, this is a poor use of the transitive property. They both distrust the govt but that does not make them the same (until trump and Q got involved).
conspiracy theorists used to focus on other distrust of the govt with aliens, area 51, the moon landing, 911, anatartic bases, underground worlds, skin walkers, native cultural stories etc. Also, they werent all white. Youre lumping a whole lot of people into one hate soup......which, is typical for you these days.

Dang dude. Sorry if you’re bitter. I encourage you to try and engage me with a more open mind.

I don’t mean to lump a lot of people in one big hate soup. I just can’t help but wonder if the misinformation and echo chambers and and rejection of facts that don’t fit one’s worldview that are so common with modern conspiracies, are also elements that have perpetuated things like white supremacist culture.

And like I said, I think a lot depends on what counts as “conspiracy”
