Like I said, I’m not worried about it.

It inevitably comes up when discussing natural disasters, and other elements of this ride called life.

I have been hauling health care workers to and from work all week.
Growing up in Kansas, and having a badass Jeep Gladiator....this ice and snow that is crippling Texas is no big deal.

Good for you. I'm guessing you have power and no frozen pipes? Why do houses in TX not have basements?

Our pool equipment is frozen solid, that is going to be ugly. We have some external spigots that are frozen too.

The first night if blackouts, it woke us when the power went off at 4 am. We got power back at 10 am, for 20 minutes, then off until 6:30 pm.

2nd day, pretty much 1 hour on, 5 hours off.

3rd day through now, power has been solid.

Good question on the basements. The answer i have gotten is that the soil is too sandy to support the added weight.
I will say, I have never heard of so many foundation issues as I have here.

Dont need a basement. Just a crawlspace with insulation on the piping. Or attic piping with insulation and a freeze heater/heattape.

Texas contractors just skimp on this stuff because this is a once a century event. Its probably not even in the code there.

^^^ Everything that froze in our home were on the exterior walls. Lowest temp inside was 44

Do they not insulate the walls there? Usually to freeze a pipe you need extended time below 32, a few dips wont do it. I would think the exterior walls would be heavily insulated in texas to hold in the AC in the heat.

When i was just out of college and broke as fuck my roommates and i tried not to ever turn on the heat above emergency level. It was routinely 42-48 in the house but our pipes never froze. Our gfs just loved visiting....
