Dave is fine in the right role. Our Coach and fans rely too much on him.
I am sure Self would happily rely in someone else if they proved to be more reliable. Unfortunately no one else has. Garrett sucks at scoring. Agbaji and Braun disappear frequently. Wilson goes ice cold regularly.
Completely missing the point. Have a good evening.
Maybe you just aren't making your point well. What are "the fans" relying on McCormack to be? Relying on anyone on this team has proven to be a poor decision. All of them are unreliable and inconsistent. DMac has been the most reliable of the unreliable mass but he is still massively flawed.

He's the best player on a bad team, meaning he's just less bad than his teammates. Self has no choice but to try to rely on him.

"but possibly worst big we've had in decades."

Players over 7 minutes per game worse than DMac - in ONE decade ( back to 2011 ):
Mitch Lightfoot
Silvio De Sousa
Carlton Bragg
Landen Lucas
Cheick Diallo
Jamari Traylor ( if he's a big )
Hunter Mickelson
Cliff Alexander
Kevin Young ( if he's a big )
Tarik Black

Better bigs than DMac:
Udoka
Dedric
Perry Ellis
TRob
Jeff Withey
Morris twins
Embiid

Lots of blame to go around.

I think Ochai is as much to blame as anyone.

Here’s Och in league play *includes Tennessee game:

5-15
4-11
3-9
3-10
7-13
3-10
5-11
6-10
3-12
5-14
3-8
5-12
4-12
4-10
7-12
5-14
4-14
8-11

84-208 (40.4%)

For a guy we think is league material, 40% from the floor across a large sample size can’t be great. Can it?

Thank you.
Though I wouldn't say this team is bad.
Just one of the bad ones under Self - which is still pretty damn good.

That lineup was in when UT had cut the lead down to 6 in the second half. They then lost the lead.

Also plus minus is the worst stat in BB/sports.

Pretty sure it was MG and not BT.

Self didn’t play BT enough in the 2nd half.

Yeah. One way or a other, more BT.

Dude’s our quickest player.

But maybe the most interesting thing about that teeny lineup was, everybody seemed to move better. Even got some fast break points.

When the familiar rotation has been so meh this year, why not mix it up? How much worse could it be?

We scored 43 in the first half!

And 23 in the second.

Doesn’t Braun still lead the team in steals as well? What a rough year for everyone. 😂

Texas adjusted and played much better. We don't like to give credit to Shaka here but his team came out with passion in the second and started hitting shots. And we were missing them.

The popular thing here will be it's because DMac. Hes not the reason why Ochai shoots 1-8 in the 2nd half. Or why Garrett shoots 2-12. I cant imagine what you guys would be like if he went 2-12. Thered be death threats.

I’m laughing at all these takes about how he’s the worst. How little they forget about Hunter, Cliff, Bragg and others.

Dave is a bit wild, a bit spazzy and way too inconsistent and a bit of a head case, but he’s a middle of the road big for Kansas in the last like 10-20 years.

I would probably take Silvio, Carlton, Cheick, Jamari, Cliff, Kevin, and Tarik as Juniors playing 22 minutes a game over DMac. I don't expect others to agree. It's not a knock on DMac as much as it's giving praise/props to the other guys.

For an elite team, junior DMac is a third option.
For a very good team, he's a second option.
Unfortunately, he's kind of our first option - and it's not because Self is stubborn - but it's because the rest of our team doesn't have that clear first option.

I'd probably take Cheick Diallo as a junior ( I think the dude should have played more, certainly over Jamari, and would have been nasty with a couple more years in college ).
The others there's no rationale for except some weird recency bias.

Bill Self on the missed dunk:
"David's been great for us, been great for us for a while now, and obviously you don't put anything on one player and one situation, we had numerous chances to make free throws, we had numerous chances to take better care of the ball, we had numerous open shots that we couldn't knock down."

Glad he says it.

And I’m glad for Dave cuz he’s the only guy who wants to be the guy on an otherwise passive roster.

But, as has been said, he’s a spaz. Everybody makes mistakes, particularly these guys, but it just seems like you can pick Dave to get mentally rattled. He makes one bad mistake, then follows it up with like 4 more quick.

Part of that is cuz he’s the only assertive guy. Part of that is cuz he’s the only big. Part of it is cuz of Self’s stubbornness. The roster’s built for small ball but we still need touches in the paint on every possession, even if the post is double teamed, OK.

I think I can appreciate Dave but also admit Dave is prone to getting himself all sped up, about as much as any player I can recall, and also is a relic of old school post ball when the trend is small.

And he’s not particularly great at traditional big stuff either. He’s not a great rebounder, doesn’t protect the rim, and is just as likely to shoot fadeaways as he is to actually make a big boy post move.
