I'm not saying the family shouldn't be "awarded" anything but.......
5 questions time....
1) $27 million. Does anyone think this is a good thing for the city to "settle" for 27 million?
2) I could look it up but I will ask on here, how much was the Floyd family looking to get?
3) This one far fetched but I feel worth discussing. Is this not an incentive for desperate people to sacrifice their lives (while involving the police) for their family's future well being?
4) If you are a tax paying citizen of the city of Minneapolis do you have any "say" that matters in regards to how you feel about a 27 million dollar settlement? Other than to vote against those who were responsible for the decision if they run for "office" again.
5) What did you have for lunch?

The crazy part is, how many taxpayers would rather continue to foot these bills, instead of just actually acknowledging as addressing police brutality

1. In a certain vacuum, it seems like a good attempt to do right for the Floyd family, but see my previous post
2. Prob much more
3. Break up with her
4. Again, previous post. I’d try to address the bigger underlying problem of policing practices
5. About to go devour some chicken tenders from the grocery store deli. 3 tenders, 2 sides, and a roll for $5 bucks! Hopefully they have the cheesy potatoes and the broccoli salad, I try to get at least one healthy side

i’ve always thought these kinds of awards are exorbitant

but what a human life, and the related emotional trauma, really worth

guaranteed the value isn’t the same across the board, by anyone making that valuation

Dang, no broccoli salad today. Tried the green bean casserole instead. It’s...ok.

I'd welcome input from someone who does this sort of thing for their day job (I certainly do not), but it seems very shrewd of MPD and the city to announce the settlement now; would seem to lower the temperature in the jury room in the criminal trials.

Cuts both ways. Agree with your take. On the other hand, as much as you and/or the judge can say during voir dire that a civil settlement is not an admission of any kind of criminal guilt, different burdens of proof, blah blah, it's in the venire pool's minds that the city has paid the family (and incorrectly, but through bias associate guilt).

Given the timing and the fact that the dollar amount is already public (although FOIA has largely quashed confidentiality), I would tend to think it was the family that wanted this out there as they almost always hold the cards on settlement acceptance.

Also possible that the prosecution and plaintiff's atty don't feel overwhelmingly confident on a guilty verdict and the family wanted the settlement docs signed before that possibility.

There's a lot of strategy, but one possible one is to play that 7:46 video to end closing argument (can you say "uncomfortable?") and then ask the jury for $350 million. All of the sudden $27m might feel like a bargain.

Where I was going is that it's probably helpful to the criminal defense to be able to point to the family already having been compensated.

Were it my case, I wouldn’t want anything out there regardless if i were the state of defense. Unless there was like an 11th hour surprise mid trial if it wasn’t going your way.

Doesn’t legally, but since god’s unavailable, we let humans and their flaws decide these things.

Im trying to find where i read it, but its an older article from the beginning of the pandemic that calculated out that the average human life in the US was worth about 5 million. Not sure exactly how that waa calculated without the article.

Obviously not saying thats my stance just thought it was a weird article at the time so it stuck ib my head.

The settlement probably took into account a punitive damage award of having a knee on a suspect’s neck for nine minutes while begging for his life, on video.
