I think they benefit more with the competition of being in the American. A quick look shows they beat #21 Texas Tech in November, and didn't face anyone else of notability since then

Only ones Rutgers have to blame has the emblem of the state of New Jersey on their back. They should've won that game going away down the stretch, and couldn't convert on anything.
