It wasn’t even the first time Dotson declared.

I think it was some combo of 1. staff thought Garrett would be better able to run point, and 2. staff thought the rest of the team surrounding Garrett wouldn’t be such a bunch of chickenshits
I mean, Garrett DID run the point last year. It was just the changes to the personnel around him exposed his weaknesses at that spot.

I think Self and co. were somehow caught off guard by Devon staying in the draft. Gurley has said as much.
Man that really sounds like Gurley covering. Not sure how you could ever be caught off guard when that high of a prospect leaves after 2 seasons. Especially considering Dot was the best frosh PG Bill ever had.

It's just a lot different playing on the ball in situational sets or in a quick spell. I wouldn't want Jalen running point next year full time, either.

The staff embraced playing MG at the point in 2021 even way back in February 2020 because they pretty much had to. And in their defense, it's not really a position they had been missing on.

"We were idiots and thought Dot was coming back" is a weird way to avoid saying "we were idiots and thought Garrett could be the guy."

To be fair, if Self was basing that off of conversations with NBA guys and then Dotson went undrafted then Self's assessment was pretty accurate. I wouldn't expect a guy to stay in the draft if he wasn't going to get drafted, either.

So unlikely we get TyTy then - but still a top 100 player, top 20 point.

January 14, 2020:

“I think Marcus hated it, and at the same time loved it,” Self said of KU playing without Dotson on Tuesday. “Because to win, we definitely need Dot. But it was a time that he could show that he can be our point guard. And there’s no doubt to who our point guard will be next year. … I think that was big for him to show that he could be Batman.

Makes sense to me that they embraced Garrett being the guy when they struck out in the fall period.

Pettiford is in a similar mold of a previous #0 PG we had, and not the one we had this year.

He is lesser rated PG than both Harris and Tharpe, but I like him better than both. Reminds me more of a Mason/Dotson type. Not as good.

So right now are we looking at a rotation of...

PG - Harris Pettiford
SG - CB McKissic
SF - Ochai Bryce
PF - Wilson Clemence
C - McCormack Adams

TyTy and Aidoo would change things again.

Mitch will be a nice leader for the guys.

Not sure which of us is wrong, but everything I've seen and read on Adams is that he's a 4 that wants to play more like a 3. And that he is a long way away from stepping on a Big 12 court.

I like this terminology, but for our program’s past with point guards and tits.

I hope and expect Bryce will start going forward, even if it means - eeek - that Braun comes off the bench.
