Re: 21-22 lineup
But I'm saying that the fact the guards are short isn't necessarily indicative that they'll get blocked a lot, or at least not necessarily more than if they were longer.

Fr/So Frank might hold the record for shots blocked (or shot into the underside of the rim)CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 1:25 pmDidn't seem to be a problem for Frank or Dotson.
If they're as fast as Dotson (no one is) we can revisit.

Re: 21-22 lineup
It’s about reading angles, using body, a deliberate release and good touch, not to mention just being quick enough, more so than just physical height

Still, just don't think it matters much at this level. Or, not nearly as much as the NBA. There's not like 6'8"+ athletic shot blocker after shot blocker out there.

We got our shots blocked a ton last season.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 1:28 pmTrue.

And there were NO great shot blockers in the conference.
I remember McCormack was near the conference lead for a while and he's not a great shot blocker, I just assumed the rest of the conference got all their blocks against us.
Getting smaller won't help that.

Re: 21-22 lineup
I kinda wonder if part of our shot blocking issues were cuz opponents knew they could clog the lane on us and sag off the perimeter cuz they knew our guards were afraid to shoot?
Re: 21-22 lineup
small guards have ALWAYS had to find creative ways to get their shots off, particularly in the lane
i’m not worried at all
if they’re good, they’re good regardless of height

Set running two different starting fives next season?

Re: 21-22 lineup
But that again goes back to the point about Braun and Och being below average finishers at the rim despite having really nice size. We've had several smaller players than those two that were way better at the rim.PhDhawk wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 1:31 pmWe got our shots blocked a ton last season.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 1:28 pmTrue.

D'Tae was every bit the better sized player than Frank, and they were night and day as rim finishers while at KU--Frank being way better.
Pro ball, yes. Graham added the floater and rim finishes and Frank is out because of his size. Here, not as big of a deal if you have strength, great balance, and just a knack for finishing at the rim. Or, elite athleticism like Cuffe does.
Re: 21-22 lineup
We need creativity from lead guards -- that means hitting from deep, midrange, and whatever works at the rim. Devonte was great at that. Frank DID get his shot blocked a ton, but he was also a very good finisher and great at drawing fouls.
That is far more important than their size, reach, or vertical...especially if that size leads to weird, weak attempts at the rim that we saw from 6'6" dudes all season.

Re: 21-22 lineup
I will take length over being short, if that is the only tradeoff. No brainer.
But, at this level, I will take the better basketball player, and maybe even the quicker guard considering how bad Self's offense is when the guards can't get around their defenders.

Re: 21-22 lineup
I'm far more interested in length at the 4 and 5 than I am at the guard spots.

Re: 21-22 lineup
Not being able to shoot off the bounce is an early concern for next season. Graham was obviously amazing at that. Frank too as a Senior. Maybe Yesefu can be that guy and Cuffe is developing that part of his game.hasbeen wrote: ↑Thu Apr 15, 2021 1:48 pm We need creativity from lead guards -- that means hitting from deep, midrange, and whatever works at the rim. That skill turned short and fat Fred Van Vleet into a 8-figure player.
