I went on a similar journey before McVeigh and feared the blackness ahead for the party. It went way crazy. Kansas was a redoubt of moderation until then. Libertarian radicalization represented by the Kochs killed the party.

I'm sure that's personal to everyone.

For me, part of it is that family I look up to always leaned pretty hard over that way and it just takes some time to become your own person. Part of it is that I grew up in Southern California, and had a strong negative reaction to the true hippy libsters. Then in law school, which tends to be a super-liberal place generally (and where I went certainly was), I often found myself taking the conservative side in debates etc.

So I was just blind to how I'd been cooked by Fox, like a frog. Fox (and the WSJ) just sort of got worse and worse over time, and I didn't see it because it was gradual.

Part of it is that I grew up in Southern California, and had a strong negative reaction to the true hippy libsters. Then in law school, which tends to be a super-liberal place generally (and where I went certainly was), I often found myself taking the conservative side in debates etc.

So I was just blind to how I'd been cooked by Fox, like a frog. Fox (and the WSJ) just sort of got worse and worse over time, and I didn't see it because it was gradual.

Appreciate the candid response. I took a similar path other than the Southern California part, which may explain my earlier realization. I now live in a Liberal haven and often find myself clashing with the far left. I've stated before that I'm very much a moderate and wish the Republican Party could get their shit together in order to have a more balanced society. But, they've gone so far down the path of hate that I don't have much hope for the foreseeable future. I truly believe this country is going to stay blue for the next 20 years.

The GOP is doing its best to ensure this by allowing itself to be cleaved in two. It was already the less popular party by a significant margin, and losing even 5% of the base that remains would/will be disastrous.
