Read entire thread.

Seems like a 3-man race between Leipold, Monken and Creighton. Held at Nebraska hasn’t gotten a call yet.

Monken likely has staff lined up. Known as a man extremely detail-oriented guy.

Leipold known more as a delevoper. Probably safest bet.

Creighton is great at recruiting and motivating. Known roots in the area.

Also Goff described as very skilled and the known guy in charge. Definitely know what he’s looking for and acts like he’s been there before.

They’re going to get a sitting HC. No assistant or coordinator. This will be a position filled by a current HC.

The more tidbits I see about Chris Creighton, the more I kind of like him. Obviously not as much as Leipold or Monken, but if both of them said no, I would be in favor of Creighton over Fritz.

Glad to hear Goff is making a good first impression. Also happy to hear Ryan Held isn't seriously be considered, that would be a Beaty-type hire if there ever was one.

It was mentioned Held would take an incentive based salary. Start at under $1M and work way up from there the more wins they got. Good idea by him, but he's just not ready.

The part that makes me happy is that Goff seems set on getting a sitting HC. Not an assistant, not a guy who has been out of the game for years or whatever. But a sitting HC who likely just finished a spring practice period for teams that have been successful in the recent past.

I think Goff knowing exactly what he wants is what is allowing them to move so fast. Sounds like he wants to have someone here for the last couple of spring practices so they can start evaluating the players and staff right away. Yes, it is highly unusual a team conducts a coaching search in the spring, but when you are the only job open at least you are not competing for potentially interested candidates. The fact that the top 4 are all sitting HCs and seem to have some level of interest in the job is nice.

When was the last time Monken was a part of a staff that didn't run the triple option? I assume he ran it at Georgia Southern...

It's been like 20 something years. But he's never been a play caller. I think that's a big distinction. Georgia Southern ran option before he got there, part of why he got the job. He was familiar with it. And then all the academy's run the option because it's the offense that takes the least amount of time to install and maintain.

Here's something that would never in a million years happen and be the biggest disaster hire ever but I'm going to bring it up.

How come on social media I consistently see one or two people who seriously think KU should hire Jason Brown? I mean, WTF makes anyone think that would ever be a good idea?

For the most part, yeah, but I had a conversation with at least one person who genuinely was convinced it was the best idea. The ultimate "zig when everyone else zags" moves as they put it.

Based upon things Jayhawk Slant has heard, they moved Kane to top tier along with Monken, Creighton and Leipold to their top tier.

This should be Monken or Leipold. Kane could be great candidate in five or six years.

Monken started as a grad asst. under Paul Johnson. He continued to coach under Johnson at Georgia Southern (1997–2001), at Navy (2002–2007), and at Georgia Tech (2008–2009) before taking the head coaching position at Georgia Southern. Now he only worked on the offensive side and he only has worked with one offensive philosophy. This is all the guy knows. You want him as a HC only if he does not run the only thing he knows?????

If he can run the triple option and win us 6 games a year, he's the man.

I have no problem with the triple option. Give me that and time consuming drives that spares the defense, and I’m good.

Didn’t OU just barely escape a home game against Army a few years ago?

I like a strong run game. When Mason was at KU, I remember multiple 15-20 play drives. That’s what I want and may bring
me back to games.b

Took OU and Kyler Murray to OT. Michigan to double OT. It works. He won’t run the triple option here, but the consensus seems to be he’ll have an option-focused offense, just using the shotgun and motions to bring the option into play.

I'm starting to side a bit here with CnBs way of thinking.

You want absolutely safest guy, you chose Leipold.
You want the guy with greatest potential with a bit of a lower floor, choose Monken.
You wanna go down same path Kansas Football usually takes, you take Jones.
You want a complete swing and have no idea if you'll hit or not, you take Chris Creighton.

Jeff Monken isn't a play caller and he's not the offensive coordinator. His two previous head coaching stops are at triple option schools. That offense is part of the culture there for various reasons. Remember how we had a guy who literally wrote the book on the RPO offense but Les Miles couldn't help himself from meddling in it and the offense never became all it could be? Meanwhile Carter Stanley was an absolute stud when Dearmon was allowed to just run his stuff (see the Boston College win and the loss vs. Texas that year). If, and yes I understand it is an if because Monken and Leipold seem to be neck and neck here, Monken does get the job, reports are part of his plan is to hire a sitting OC and let them run their system. He wants to be a CEO-type coach that lets his coaches coach and his coordinators run their game plan. If he hires an OC that exclusively runs the triple option out of the Flexbone, then we'll worry about that. His offense is going to depend a lot more on the OC he would hire rather than where he's coached before.
