Have a MacBook Pro late 17, 3.1 Ghz Quad i7, 16 GB RAM.
I target display that to a 27 inch 2013 imac as my monitor at home.
Newer mac's don't support that anymore ( thanks Apple ).

Looked at trade in value for new mac: $850.
Trade in value for imac: $200.

Newer m1 8GB chip ( 2020 ) has out performed 2019's 2016 inch macbook pro 4.8 Ghz i9 in most tasks ( excluding video/3D rendering which is a valid consideration for me - but only 7 to 12% better ).

Options:

1. Mac Mini with m1 chip with 512 GB storage is 899.
Pros: Cheap. Just as fast/faster as 2019 Macbook 16 inch.
Cons: No keyboard or mouse. ( i have those ). Would have to buy a monitor. Can't really work on things unless I have a monitor.

2. Macbook Pro 16 inch ( 2019 ). i9 up to 4.8 ghz. 16 GB RAM. Radeon pro 5500 M. 512 GB storage. 2800.
Pros: Biggest screen for laptop. Fastest option for rendering video/3d.
Cons: Expensive. Also in day to day tasks, including the Adobe Suite and XCode, actually slower than M1 chip computers. Will need to buy a monitor for day to day.

3. Macbook Pro 13 inch ( 2020 ). m1 chip with 512 GB storage is 1499.
Pros: Just as fast/faster as 2019 Macbook 16 inch. Portable, light, best battery life.
Cons: Smaller screen if not connected to a monitor for day to day work. Slightly slower video render. Will need to buy a monitor for day to day.

4. iMac 24 ( 2021 ). m1 chip with 512 GB storage is 1699.
Pros: Just as fast/faster as 2019 Macbook 16 inch. Comes with a top of the line display.
Cons: Only the one display. Not portable.
It would be very funny if pdub doesn't see that I'm trying to save him $150 (for a monitor!) because he's afraid of my F the NCAA takes:

I bought an Acer 24" IPS Full HD 3 years ago for right around $100. I'm sure it is even cheaper now.

Every time I have started to buy a near top of the line LG 4K because of WFH, I just ask myself why and can't do it when it's all just Office Suite, Browser, Zoom, etc.
I have a 34" curved one at home (monitor, you sickos), and I'm considering buying one to replace my two-monitor setup at the office.

I have a 34" uncurved (duh) Ultrawide monitor at work that replaced the two-monitor setup and haven't looked back.

i actually kinda like the multi-monitor setup

i’ve got two now, but had three at my previous gig and found it really helpful. maybe it’s just an organization thing, and it seemed more helpful to have windows partitioned on different screens, rather than overlapping on a single one

I find that Windows is pretty good about sticking things to one side or the other.

Double bad take. Curved is way better. And throw up a 24" document view next to that 34" monitor (mine is 32). That's when shit starts getting real.

I work on the same floor as our traders. It's just a city block with rows and rows of people with set ups like this. It's comical to look at.

And most of the time the computer is doing programmed trades anyway! Unless you’re an air traffic controller or power grid operator anything more than two monitors is overkill.

I literally have no idea what is going on anyway. I have to pass all this to go to our kitchen, and I'm just annoyed by it. Our live set up is by the kitchen tho, so if someone is on CNBC or Bloomberg or something, I do like to watch the live interview while having my Diet Dr. Pepper.

Special FX artist or 3D animator would have an argument for 3.

I’d even take 3 as I sometimes use spaces on the Mac ( and if I use spaces on the Mac that means I need another full screen ).

Terminal, browsers for email, kcrim, and finder/directories on one screen.

Code editor and browser for preview on another screen.

Adobe suite ( depending which ones I have open ) on another space.
