Probably both true to some extent. Our public education system (while some of the best in the world) is a joke in many ways. If I could change one thing in particular it would be how we teach history and our place in the world. Really need to stop the "America is the Best!" storyline. We live in a great country, but their are a lot of other great countries and cultures out there. We don't need to think of ourselves as being #1.

For me:

Police training and hiring needs adjustment. I would agree that bias training would be appropriate where there have been proven variation in statistics of police force/arrests. Maybe the reduction of firearms in the force. Cameras on every active officer that they cannot turn off.

I think the likelihood that Chauvin himself is what the general US public would define as racist is high - I think he escalated the situation and murdered someone who was not a threat.

The likelihood of Reardon, the officer who fired at the girl with the knife, being racist is undetermined and I don't think can be assumed - and I don't think we can just categorize every incident where an officer shoots a POC as systemic racism - in fact, for me, trying to compare this incident in anyway to what happened to Floyd undermines the movement/argument.

People celebrating Christmas isn't related to police shootings of POC.

She was scared for her life, so much so she called the cops cuz she thought they were there to protect her, and yet you can only seem to see her as some kinda lawless gang banging monster. (Any word on whether she had weed in her system too??)

Let’s instead have a moment of humanity: her name was Ma'Khia Bryant. She was a 16yo in foster care who was so scared for her life that she called the cops. She was obviously panicked, and perhaps she thought the knife was her best chance at survival. Who knows? It’s not like we can ask her now.

I don’t want to condone that she screwed up. But let’s also not condone that she was afforded zero anything either.

Think back when you were 16. Did you do anything stupid? Maybe even threatening? And yet, you didn’t get mowed down in your own front yard because of it.

I also struggle to paint the one guy who DID kill anyone as some kinda life saver, but I understand the decision he made in that instant, and why it’s within the law. But to that community, who just lost another of their own, do you think they feel like justifying it on the cop’s behalf?

Perhaps the biggest tragedy of all is just how dividing this is. One side thinks the other is a bunch of monsters. And they’re not wrong! But it’s all just so dehumanizing.

You can't just sit here and make up some random story and then be pissed that people don't feel sad about your made up story. You have no idea if she was scared for her life. The argument was over cleaning up the house:

You have no idea if she was panicked or not when (or if) she made the call to 911. But since it fits your narrative, it is "obvious". You failed to mention that the police had just shown up to the house when Bryant came out of the house and then attacked a girl who was out in her driveway.

Seconds later, Bryant lunges with an apparent knife at one woman, 20, who had been standing in the driveway of the home, forcing her to the ground. A man, 43, started kicking the woman as she tried to get up.

Bryant then turned to another woman, 22, with the knife, at which point Reardon discharged four shots from his firearm, fatally striking Bryant. "

The actual facts of the situation seem to not support anything from your made up story.

I can think of a some other reasons.. Maybe she was pissed at the two girls for telling her to clean up and wanted them to leave. Maybe whoever reported that she was one of the multiple people who called the cops that day was not correct. It sounds like at least three people did at some point. We have no clue. That's my point.

I feel terrible that a stupid argument about something so trivial escalated to the point where the police were called, where a knife was wielded and where someone lost their life. I can't begin to comprehend what the young woman's experiences were in her time on earth. I am very sad that she is dead.

I just don't see this as some horrible abuse of power or as an example of systemic racism. If these people had a white neighbor and the same situation played out in that household, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended with the same result.

Seems there were multiple issues and multiple times the police were called to that house in the past.
While extremely admirable that someone (or more than one person?) wants to provide a Foster home, perhaps that person (or more than one person) needs to be reassessed if they should be fostering kids? That's a question, not an accusation.
That person (or more than one person) very well might be a great Foster parent but my sincere concern is if they are not and if the kids suffer because of it.

it’ll be interesting to hear why cops thought he was a threat, whether they feared for their life, or whether it was a matter of blasting him just for fleeing.

Contrast MN, trying to be progressive after George Floyd and releasing body cams right away after cops shot Daunte Wright and quickly bringing charges because of it, with NC good ol boys dragging their feet.

I know their department policies say not to release body cam until the investigation is complete, but one also can’t help but think that if the body cam footage helped to justify the cops shooting an unarmed dude in the back, don’t they tend to be more up front? (If Ma’khia Bryant didn’t have a knife, you think we woulda seen that footage yet?)

Either way, perhaps one of the big reforms needed is timely disclosure of body cams and other evidence. How many times otherwise have we seen “investigations” dragged on for months or years that ultimately shrug off police brutality?
