but they are both a threat, which is the problem

unless you’re a criminal, you shouldn’t see the cops as a threat...jmo
Good cops are not a threat and are not a problem. The "bad" cops are the problem.
duh?
I'm not sure how you fix it, though, without a massive reimagining of state and local budgets. Tax increases (in the short-term), anyway. Because you need to do at least two things: (1) direct resources (money!) at community (after-school programming, for example) and mental health/substance abuse programs,* and (2) substantially raise the qualifications required (money!) for law enforcement officers who carry firearms.

A massive part of the problem is the sort of profile the job attracts right now.

* It is not hard to imagine this spending pays enormous dividends (and saves a ton of money) over time, but it will be a while for obvious reasons.

Cuz if you add up all the police budgets across Merica, it balances out to equal like the third biggest military budget in the world.

Maybe instead of paramilitary aggression against our citizens, we could do something that works for us instead?

I agree we should try and do something that works - for EVERYONE.
Perhaps if a large percentage of our citizens chose to be law abiding (regardless if the laws suck or not) instead of asshole criminals, maybe our police forces wouldn't feel the need to have "paramilitary aggression" at the rate they do.
There are parts of our country that are literal war zones and often it's the police who are also considered the enemy.

Ousdahl isn't sure, but whatever the solution he'll inevitably dislike it.

Refer back to fish’s post.

It could potentially go a long way for money to go less to military-style weapons and tanks and tactical gear, and more toward community programs and mental health and substance abuse resources.

And/or put some of that weapons budget toward police payroll budgets, to attract more qualified cops that are gonna be more professional about their jobs.

And more to Trad's point, we have to stop the practice of the good cops defending to the end the bad cops

so we can take down the fortress we have built around the capital in dc? send home the national guard so they can be with their loved ones. can we do that. can we stop funding private security forces for our elected officials. can we do that. the good folks in south central want to know.

If we take down the "fortress we have built around the capital in dc" will you and your family members stop trying to kill politicians who view the world differently than you do?

Because, yes, most of us would like to spend that money elsewhere, but we have too many sociopaths like you in our society.

^^^^^^^^YESSSS. Beat me to it Cascadia!

It looks like many of the “law enforcement” people that MICH is defending are the problem, and that’s the reason why the NG is there

That will be the biggest and most important step in the process.
