It could potentially go a long way for money to go less to military-style weapons and tanks and tactical gear, and more toward community programs and mental health and substance abuse resources.

And/or put some of that weapons budget toward police payroll budgets, to attract more qualified cops that are gonna be more professional about their jobs.

This sort of thing is so, so important.

I've gone the other way on this issue very recently. Free public education is just free daycare for parents who can't afford to have kids.

If we actually took advantage of this free daycare and educated children, then I'd be on board again. Or just call it what it is, government subsidized daycare.

But, even at that extreme, it's government-subsidized daycare that frees people up to work.

I’ll admit, there’s this little tiny mich in me that thinks WHY SHOULD MY TAX DOLLARS PAY FOR KIDS IF I AINT GOT NONE, but it’s tiny.

And besides, of all the dumb shit our tax dollars go toward, I think paying for preschool/daycare is far more worthy than, say, tax breaks to otherwise filthy rich corporations, or bombing brown folks.

And isn’t Merica like the only developed country in the world with a notable lack of childcare resources? Despite also being the wealthiest. Yaaaay priorities.

Because not having kids grow up on the streets is good for everyone. Parents being able to choose to work instead of staying home is good for everyone.

What kids learn from K-12 (now soon to be pre-12) needs to be accomplished by the 10th grade.

11th and 12th grade need to be the equivalent of what is an Associates Degree. This would allow for a traditional Bachelors Degree to be attained in 2-3 years of college.

Better educated youth and fewer people with massive college debt.

Because your tax dollars towards education pay to educate the people you have to deal with, work with, get services from, be policed by, etc...every day.

I consider it an investment in the smoother running of my day to day life.

There are a lot of kids out there that do not have the support system in place to allow them to complete that level of education. Yes, a good chunk of kids could handle it fine but I would expect it to also result in an increased amount of drop outs.

High school is for providing a solid base. Anything beyond that base is a specialization that needs to be attained post high school via job training, trade school, Comm. College, University etc...

It doesn't seem to require a master's degree to get most $30k teaching jobs from what I have experienced.

I'm 100% with Cascadia on this. It needs to be school.

And, if it is school, that should only help HS students to not drop out.

You can re-tool how you set up HS. If you are not going to college, your curricula could be geared more toward trades, so you'd take more welding, shop, drafting, woodworking, home-ec type courses. If you're college bound you take AP courses and dual credit and prepare for college.

And if there is an overall net decrease in quality then that is also a problem.

I would rather there be targeted assistance for things like this. Not just blanket "it's free for everyone" attempts at fixes (although a blanket fix attempt is absolutely better than status quo).
