Would you be on the Jury?
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
Unless and until good cops speak up against the bad ones, maybe it really is that acab
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
I'm an idiot but it makes me feel better about myself when geniuses such as yourself don't know the difference between Capital and Capitol - and I do.
Thanks man!
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
Heck, the magaheads who stormed the Capitol didn’t even know it was the Capitol!

This sort of thing is so, so important.ousdahl wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 9:15 amRefer back to fish’s post.
It could potentially go a long way for money to go less to military-style weapons and tanks and tactical gear, and more toward community programs and mental health and substance abuse resources.
And/or put some of that weapons budget toward police payroll budgets, to attract more qualified cops that are gonna be more professional about their jobs.
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
I’m pretty sure I feel strongly in favor of free preschool, and I don’t even have kids
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
It's an everyone-wins no-brainer.
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
I've gone the other way on this issue very recently. Free public education is just free daycare for parents who can't afford to have kids.
If we actually took advantage of this free daycare and educated children, then I'd be on board again. Or just call it what it is, government subsidized daycare.

Re: Would you be on the Jury?
But, even at that extreme, it's government-subsidized daycare that frees people up to work.Cascadia wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 9:30 am I've gone the other way on this issue very recently. Free public education is just free daycare for parents who can't afford to have kids.

Re: Would you be on the Jury?
I’ll admit, there’s this little tiny mich in me that thinks WHY SHOULD MY TAX DOLLARS PAY FOR KIDS IF I AINT GOT NONE, but it’s tiny.
And besides, of all the dumb shit our tax dollars go toward, I think paying for preschool/daycare is far more worthy than, say, tax breaks to otherwise filthy rich corporations, or bombing brown folks.
And isn’t Merica like the only developed country in the world with a notable lack of childcare resources? Despite also being the wealthiest. Yaaaay priorities.

Re: Would you be on the Jury?
Because not having kids grow up on the streets is good for everyone. Parents being able to choose to work instead of staying home is good for everyone.ousdahl wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 9:36 am I’ll admit, there’s this little tiny mich in me that thinks WHY SHOULD MY TAX DOLLARS PAY FOR KIDS IF I AINT GOT NONE, but it’s tiny.

Re: Would you be on the Jury?
Then we need to make better use of these tax dollars and actually educate kids better.
What kids learn from K-12 (now soon to be pre-12) needs to be accomplished by the 10th grade.
11th and 12th grade need to be the equivalent of what is an Associates Degree. This would allow for a traditional Bachelors Degree to be attained in 2-3 years of college.
Better educated youth and fewer people with massive college debt.

Re: Would you be on the Jury?
maybe if wages were better, and wealth was better-balanced, many families wouldn’t be required to have both parents working 40+ hours/week and would be able to, you know, actually parent
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
Cascadia - Agree 100%. A complete reimagining of what you're "supposed" to do after high school is very much needed.
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
Because your tax dollars towards education pay to educate the people you have to deal with, work with, get services from, be policed by, etc...every day.ousdahl wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 9:36 am I’ll admit, there’s this little tiny mich in me that thinks WHY SHOULD MY TAX DOLLARS PAY FOR KIDS IF I AINT GOT NONE, but it’s tiny.

I consider it an investment in the smoother running of my day to day life.
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
I wonder if that also requires more and better educators? Which prob means kore money for educators. (Same with more money for cops?)
Cuz, I mean, how many folks wanna pursue a masters degree to go start in the field for $30k a year

Re: Would you be on the Jury?
It just sucks that the moneyed interests basically loot the Merican people’s tax money.
Instead of going toward shit that would actually help folks, it goes toward the military and trickle down.
Merica might be the only country ever in which many of the citizens don’t expect the gummint to do anything for them.

Re: Would you be on the Jury?
There are a lot of kids out there that do not have the support system in place to allow them to complete that level of education. Yes, a good chunk of kids could handle it fine but I would expect it to also result in an increased amount of drop outs.Cascadia wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 9:41 am Then we need to make better use of these tax dollars and actually educate kids better.

High school is for providing a solid base. Anything beyond that base is a specialization that needs to be attained post high school via job training, trade school, Comm. College, University etc...
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
It doesn't seem to require a master's degree to get most $30k teaching jobs from what I have experienced.
Re: Would you be on the Jury?
I'm 100% with Cascadia on this. It needs to be school.
And, if it is school, that should only help HS students to not drop out.
You can re-tool how you set up HS. If you are not going to college, your curricula could be geared more toward trades, so you'd take more welding, shop, drafting, woodworking, home-ec type courses. If you're college bound you take AP courses and dual credit and prepare for college.

I only came to kick some ass...

And if there is an overall net decrease in quality then that is also a problem.Cascadia wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 9:30 am I've gone the other way on this issue very recently. Free public education is just free daycare for parents who can't afford to have kids.

I would rather there be targeted assistance for things like this. Not just blanket "it's free for everyone" attempts at fixes (although a blanket fix attempt is absolutely better than status quo).
